Sea school makes it very easy to learn. Some people struggle with plotting but if you can read a compass and work a parallel ruler you will be just fine. Take the practice test they give you repeatedly. One of the ones they give you will be the exact test. Try to memorize the acronyms they give you for the rules of the road. If you take the course in Charleston try to take it when Don is the instructor. He’s a great teacher.

If sea school “handles” the testing, does medical, first aid and files your paperwork I don’t think their could be an easier way to get it.
Like anything educational what you get out is related to what you put it.

It'd be cool to walk around wearing frayed cut off khakis, a dingy wrinkled white button up with the sleeves rolled, wearing a ratty ball cap, grey beard and have folks call you "Cappy" when you stroll by.

For me, I want to retire in a few years. Everything should be paid off, cars house etc. I'd like to quit working a do a few charters a month to stay busy, have fun and put a few dollars in my pocket for doing what I love to do. If I do more than a few a month, that's a bonus. Just want to be my own boss, work when I want to and not when I have to.

I guess the consensus here is do not do it. It sounds way hard. I find if you never try hard stuff, you will never fail.

You should go to dental school when you retire. Way easier than capt'n'n and it checks all those boxes.

years ago a couple buddies tried me to get one with them. I could not think of a reason other than adding that to my name, it wasn't a need.. close to it, I've thought about it, but in the end it didn't sway me

Oh, and, I can marry people...and take wedding photos at the same time...then take them birding out to the sea islands...

Seriously it couldn't be any more useless, at this point, than my license to coach soccer.

So does this mean 2oofer really does have it made and that he's a complaining, discontented peckerhead by choice?

    A youthful indiscretion...

Ha ha - Both my kids played soccer growing up so I coached teams for 10+ years. I was head coach on the girls teams and they were always really good and usually won the end of season tournaments and were undefeated for a couple of seasons. My boys teams sucked and the first time or two didn't win a game. I came to terms that my coaching style that worked so well for girls just wasn't right for boys so I took assistant roles on the boys teams. A lot of the kids on my daughter teams went on to play in college somewhere (not that high of a hurdle considering Title IX). My daughter had a choice between soccer scholarships or track - she liked running so she went on a track scholarship.

    I've got a "D" or "Advanced Regional" license - I got it over a 4-day weekend in Jacksonville, Fl...in August...it was hot.

Ive kicked it around several times.

Decided each time, I didn't want to maintain the million dollar insurance policy, or open myself up to a litigious event should an accident happen, I am found at fault, and it's discovered I am a license captain.
