    Mine is getting my open sight 30-30 glenfield short mag.
    I think teaching to hunt/shoot open sights is the way I want to go and he can’t hurt the gun. The caliber is also very utilitarian and manageable.

    Absolutely! Thats how I was taught..that's how my children will learn. I had to prove proficiency with iron sights before I got a scope and had to consistently be able to be on the paper before I received more than one bullet.

    First time I shot a deer, it was with a lever action Marlin (that I still have to this day, many moons later) sitting over a food plot with no shot over 75-80 yds
