Default A few wood working questions

I'm about to start working on a few projects. Primarily, a reloading/gun maintenance bench that wraps around (multiple sections so it can be moved) into a simple desk. Looking at maybe pocket screws and rabbet joints. Would like to try my hand at making my own drawers, but not trying to make something elaborate.

Question 1 - where do you go to find higher grade plywood than big box stores? Stuff that is true to thickness (1/4, 1/2, 3/4"). Or is it needed?

Question 2 - what is the general opinion on pocket screws? Looking at the Kreg fixture as being an early investment.

Stier Supply in Irmo of Lake Murray Blvd. They have all kinds of different wood. Also check with Mann Tool in West Columbia. They have everything under the sun in regards to woodworking, a knowledgeable staff, and are very proud of what they know and sell.

I like pocket screws myself and use my kreg often. Kreg also makes a jig for making your own drawers that will probably be a big time and learning curve saver.

Pocket screws are for novices, unskilled and women. Simple drawers can be made with rabbets and screws, glue or staples if utilitarian and plywood boxes. Solid wood you can do a simple box joint if you have a table saw. You can cut lap joints , tenons, rabbets, and a ton of other joints on a table saw. You can buy a mortise attachment for a drill press or use a drill bit and sharp chisel. Dowels and biscuits are good to reinforce joints.

A good router and bit set is your friend. Get 1/2” collet bits, 1/4” are worthless.

Do I own Kreg jigs, yep, I just rarely use them, the joints just aren’t that strong. In a pinch maybe a face frame.

Plywood can be had at some lumber yards. HD and Lowe’s carry some Sande and Baltic Birch as well as oak. A hardwood center will have the nicer multi ply types. A lot of that stuff is in MM or 32’d measurements.

Yeah, but do you consider a dog to be a filthy animal? I wouldn't go so far as to call a dog filthy but they're definitely dirty. But, a dog's got personality. Personality goes a long way.
