Default AR-15 Forward Assist - Anyone ever use it?

Have any of you ever had a need to use the Forward Assist mechanism on an AR-15 upper?

And if you have had a need, were you in a military firefight or training situation vs a civilian match such as 3-Gun, etc?

Just curious as it seems like with today's mfg specs and quality they may be virtually obsolete, but that may be an uninformed opinion on my part.

    Thanks.

I am not military and don't shoot my AR that often but I was under the impression the forward assist was more for debris/dirt in the mechanism vs manufacturing or quality of parts. That is another uninformed opinion.

I had some lead 300 BLK ammo that would jam going in the chamber. I felt like I was going to break the charging handle getting it out so I used the forward assist to get it fully chambered. Never had a problem with other ammo. Sometimes I use the FA to quietly close the bolt when hunting. It's not very stealthy to slam the bolt closed.

Yes. Hog hunting. But I don’t clean my guns often and shoot suppressed so it can happen every once in a while

I don’t current shoot anything suppressed so hadn’t thought about the blowback dirt, etc.

Same here. Good point, since I was thinking about urging a sport upper receiver on one I’m putting together for playing with coyotes.

    Thanks for all the feedback.

    I use it constantly.

I mash the button nervously with my thumb when I’m not shooting. It’s like a mil-spec fidget spinner.

    Ah, memories....

Only two times I ever needed it.

First, training with MILES gear using blanks, after plugging the barrel so it would cycle the blanks, the blanks carboned up the bcg all to hell and back.

Second, range detail burning up ammo after qualifications was over, literally thousands of rounds non stop. They kept dropping off arm loads of 30 round mags and picking up empties to refill. Used it only a few times that day. Government waste at its best, but it was fun.

This. Messed up my son on the first deer he ever shot at by failing to do this. Learned my lesson.

This. My bolt slams loud enough to wake the dead. I always use it to close the bolt when I get in the stand
