Default Willyworm - before I call Spectrum

I'd like to know what I am talking about. Good luck.

In our house, we have two of those big smart TV boxes y'all have. A computer receives by wifi, I wish it was wired, and the boys play their games on wifi.

The problem is, when I am down in the basement and try to watch movies on prime or whatever I do on anything like prime, maybe Hitchcock 46 on Youtube, it takes the load of wifi and the boys bitch because they lose wifi power.

Other than ditching their games, is their something to be done to boost the wifi volume, power or whatever??

Sounds like you might have a couple issues combined here... WiFi is problem one. WiFi is great and convenient, until it doesn't work right. WiFi is just so susceptible to interference, with reduced signal strength due to passing thru walls, etc. So getting a good signal to all the devices on the network sometimes is a struggle. Ideally you would want to put a wired connection on your primary devices, PS4, firebox, etc... assuming the amazon fire box has a wired ethernet connection port on it. I think mine does.

Second, you need to see what type of speeds you're actually getting compared to what you're paying for. Plug a laptop or a computer into the modem directly with a ethernet/cat 5 cable. Run a speed test. Speedtest.net or bandwidthplace.com would be a good one. Make sure no one else is on and see what you get. If you're purchasing a 10Mbps connection from us and get 8MBps, you're doing good. Now if you're on a 50M connection and you're only getting 10 or so, then that's not good. Might be time to schedule a trouble call to have a tech come troubleshoot.

Of course our internet service is "best effort". That the asterisk next to the advertised speed that says "speeds may vary". You're essentially sharing one big pool of bandwidth with your neighbors. Bear in mind so many people are home right now, that it's really straining most providers' bandwidth, and we're no exception. But if you speed test your Spectrum provided internet connection and speeds are acceptable in comparison to what you're paying for, then what's happening is with all the devices in your home you're essentially spreading your available bandwidth too thin amongst them and there's simply not enough to go around. Might be time to suck it up and upgrade to the next fastest speed. Either way, you might find yourself throwing some money at this problem to make it go away, whether it be paying someone to come drop you in a couple cat5 wires inside the house, or getting a faster connection.

    All that make sense?

Oh I know, all too well. Trust me.

Had an air force guy having issues one time. I rolled to his house on a trouble call. He was trying to pump out a super hi resolution camera feed and didn't have the upload to support. He was bout to get his virtual swerve on with some interhoes.

If I call Spectrum, are they going to try and help me or say thats the best they can do. When I call, they say we are one of their good customers. Do I believe them. Or should I find someone local who will fix this crap.

Can't tell ya really. A lot depends on who you get on the other end of the phone. You're gonna want to talk to someone at tech support for helping determine if the modem is staying online and identifying what speed you are paying for.

Run your speed test from a device plugged directly into the modem then report back.

The results of the speed test will determine your plan of attack. If your modem is staying online consistently and the speed test is relatively good compared to the speed you're actually paying for, then you'll be at a crossroads. Either 1. Go the wired route to eliminate the Wi-Fi variable completely and give not consistent speeds to the devices; 2. pay more for a faster speed and pray it helps resolves the dilemma, or 3. You can simply do both.

I reported to Spectrum that their main service line for this side of the neighborhood is above grade in the creekbed in my back yard. Haven't heard back. Just wondering if they'll bury it. It's run in conduit, which I thought was odd - or it's real old.

No telling what happened. Any time we did a directional bore, which going under creek beds and ditches usually is, when the boring bit comes out the other side they pull a conduit in as they pull the boring rods back out one by one. Then pull the came in the conduit. Quite common actually. That way additional cables or replacements can be pulled in later without having to do the work again, assuming the conduit itself isn't damaged. Perhaps all the 100 year floods have naturally dredged it and exposed the conduit. No telling.

I'll send it to the construction manager in Columbia and have someone check it out.

Yessir, building it out as fast as we can. This virus has slowed up our ground crews but they are back at it Monday morning. Getting close to halfway there if I had to guess. Lots of $$
