Default Laptop / Notebook / Tablet thingy....

We are not a tech family. My kids don't have tablets, computers or phones. They barely have video game stuff. What they do have is very limited. Most of the home-school work is online which makes it difficult for son 1 and son 2 to be working at that same time since we only have one laptop. My wife and I discussed last night getting a tablet/notebook of sorts. Was thinking about buying direct from microsoft because for students you'll get office 365 for free. Thinking something small...like a surface or something similar. Would like to be able to pack it up and take it with us pretty easily.

Any recommendations from the SCDucks geek squad?

Not looking for anything powerful. Don't need a gaming system. This would be mainly for browsing and going online to do homework.

I have a surface pro for work and I really like it. My house is ran of an iPad that literally controls most of the house and security. Both have there place but the iPad will do all I need at home. I need the surface pro for running xactimate and sales force.

Our school system issues Chromebooks. That's all I know about that.

Go get a $250 laptop from Walmart with a 128 SSD, 4GB ram and a 14" screen. Light, easy to transport and will be more than enough. No need to spend $500-1K to browse the internet.

Lex/Richland 5 issues chrome books to 6th grade and up.

K-5 uses them but they are left in the classroom.

    Just Get them chrome books.

I am on a Surface Pro for work and like it a lot - but know that the memory in these things are pretty limited. They are designed to store things on the cloud, I believe.

But Corp love the thousands of reports they can generate after you spend 2 hours a day with useless data entry.

Chromebooks are pretty much just web browsers. If you mentioned wanting microsoft office (you can get it on any machine for free with a student email address, I have it on my macbook) you're gonna need something with some memory. I'd go to sam's and get a middle of the road HP ($700-$800 range) you could probably get something used offline like on ebay or amazon for less, but I'm wary of that approach. If you buy something cheap, it's gonna struggle to run windows 10 and all of it's extra normal processes.

This all assumes you're wanting something beyond just browsing the internet. If thats the case get a chromebook and call it a day.

Our schools are not using chromebook. They are windows and 365 driven. Want something they can grow with and take and use Word and PPT as they need it.

Then get a middle of the road HP from Sam's or best buy. RAM is key, processors haven't made dramatic improvements in last 8 years or so. Storage is negligible as you can buy external ssd's to the hearts content whenever you run out of room.

I needed a computer for the home office to run basic functions. I picked up a “reconditioned” desktop computer off amazon very inexpensive and have had no issues. You can tell it was an old office computer in a previous life.

my wife has a surface pro for her craft shit and also for school. No issues at all. I have a Surface laptop at work and it kicks ass.

But a $500 laptop off of microsoft site will work just as well for your needs. Caution that computer companies are having delays with parts. Just ordered two for new employees and it will be 2-3 weeks were as I could get in 2-3 days before.
