The unvarnished truth is that a trained dog is a perishable commodity. Few things are so subject to deterioration. It is almost as hard-and it takes almost as good a hunter-to keep a dog good as to make one as good. Eternal vigilance is the price of a good dog, regardless of who you are, or where and how virtuously you live. - Havilah Babcock

Another season is in the books. We killed 248 this year. Hunted with some old friends and made some new ones. We also hunted with a lot of people from this forum.

Time to swap the dog box out for some fishing rods and get ready for turkeys

I see a kid that looks forward to following Jake every year. Thanks for talking all the other young ones hunting. Like you and I have talked about before the number of squirrels shot is impressive but watching a dog do what it was bred to do is awesome.

Nothing exciting to me in those pics, but at least nobody's gonna accuse you of being a fag

Looks good ! I know you have been looking around for a female to breed but you need to make it a priority. My dog is getting old and I never got a pup out of him. I don’t have the desire to buy a pup and train it so it looks like the day is soon coming that there won’t be a squirrel dog here for the first time in a long time. You need to pass on what Jake has, if I can help I will. BJ

I think Havilah's advice is true about birds dogs because we ask them to do unnatural stuff, like pointing, not chase birds and stand and watch his bracemate retrieve but squirrel dogs get to do exactly what they love and seem to get better and smarter with age.

I wish I had more squirrels on my property so I could invite you down. I've got mostly fox squirrels, which I'm reluctant to shoot because they just don't repopulate as easily. If I had a decent gray squirrel population, I'd have a squirrel dog of my own. I always enjoy your posts.

It’s a privilege to see great dog work and the fella that trained him hunting. Thanks Michael.
