    OK...
I'm gonna piggyback on this thread and ask:
If you had one tree to plant/manage/help to flourish, what would it be? (for deer and other game critters)

White oak? Chestnut? Persimmon? Sawtooth? Crabapple?

Because it's probably the most consistent producing white oak in SC.
It's among the oldest living, extremely wind hearty, and produces in relatively short period of time IE 20-25 years.

There are some sawtooth oaks in the parking lot of the business park where I work that put out an tremendous amount of acorns relative to the size of the trees. They aren't big trees, perhaps 20 feet tall and maybe 6" diameter at chest height. There are still acorns on them now and the ground is covered with them.

I've read that sawtooths will start producing at about 7 years old.

One true statement , longleaf pines don't produce Acorns.

I have seen Sawtooth Oaks produce incredible amounts of acorns.. and the deer seem to walk past them in favor of "other" Acorns.

Sawtooths are not native. They are now listed as invasive. The seedlings can spread quick.

They grow quick, soft wood, and produce lots of mast. As stated the acorn is the less preferred by wildlife

Around here the water oak would grow the quickest and produce mast first.

Safest bets here are hybrid pear, southern persimmon and water/pin oaks, imo.

every time I leave a tree out by itself the wind comes by and knocks it down because it was leaning on its buddies.

Deer around here won't even eat a water oak acorn. Live oaks is where its at.
