    Default SoDak changes (again)

PIERRE, S.D. — A bill that would increase the number of nonresident waterfowl licenses the South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks Commission would be able to allocate was introduced Tuesday, Feb. 4.

The bill’s prime sponsor is District 29 state Sen. Gary Cammack, R-Union Center.

The bill would entitle someone with a nonresident waterfowl license to hunt migratory waterfowl for “two periods of five consecutive days,” rather than the current consecutive 10-day period.

Under current state law, the Legislature decides how many nonresidents can come into South Dakota to hunt waterfowl. The bill would change that so the Game, Fish and Parks Commission would decide.

The commission would also be able to divide the state into up to three units and establish limitations on the number of nonresident waterfowl licenses available..

The bill also caps the number of nonresident waterfowl licenses at 6,000; the current cap is 4,000 licenses.

“Any increase in the number of licenses allocated may not exceed five percent of the number of licenses allocated in the previous calendar year,” according to state law, which the bill would leave unchanged.
