Votes matter and majority rules. When Obama had 60 votes in the senate and control of the house he crammed Obamacare down our throats. Presently the house and senate are controlled by different parties so power shifts to the president. Executive orders and agency policies rule the day. When the senate and president's party line up then executive power is even stronger because of judge appointments.
Our role as electors is to get as many people of similar minds elected. Your vote, contributions and grassroots efforts make a difference. If you can help you candidate by helping arrange a favorable matchup by legally voting then so be it. America is worth the sanctimonious effort.
