    Default Catahoula

The recent supreme court ruling is quite amazing and disturbing on several fronts. First, is the concern about the wintering grounds for canvasbacks which Catahoula is one of the most important wintering grounds for them In the United States.
I cringe at the idea that next year those wintering grounds could be dry.

The other thing I find quite interesting is apparently the people who filed a lawsuit will not be getting one dime when they asked for $30 million.

There are a lot of small business owners that will be greatly affected. And last but not least, is the loss of a great hunting area with a lot of historical hunting tradition which will be lost.
Just a very sad outcome for a number of reasons.

Very similar comparison. Imagine if SC lost that for hunting / fishing.

Chalk it up to more Louisiana bullsh$* politics! It's not hard to imagine this going through and the place drying up. It's similar to the land/water rights issues that is now keeping B.A.S.S from holding tournaments down there. The landowners shooting at fishermen, navigable canals being "owned" and gated, whole sections of waterways being off limits due to the cry of trespassing by the so called owners.
Living in Moncks Corner but looking forward to moving back to the West Coast in 2020 where there are more ducks and less duck hunters!! LOL

The government comes in and takes your land for a flood mitigation project. Subsequently, oil and gas are found on those lands. Additionally, while you have lost the ability to lease those lands for hunting, "the public" now is using the land to run their guide businesses.

The Supreme Court of the State of Louisiana's ruling for the original landowners is a win for America and freedom.

Sorry you lost your welfare hole, beaux...

I don’t believe you have your facts correct. There’s a lot more to it than you state.

Not a great precedent especially when Hobcaw is trying to limit entry for fishing and oysters in N. Inlet.

Regardless of whether you are right or I am right, the fact remains the loss of habitat is going to be a huge one for canvasbacks and other species. Agree??

You think that the landowners are not going to ensure that there is plenty of habitat for them to lease and hunt ducks on? They have already lost out on generations of rightful income. They won't allow that to happen...

Some of us do know. Land you own taken, 50-11 blinds on a lake where the only people that care about taking care of the ducks are the landowners and not the idiots raping the resource. Big win for the landowners and big win for the waterfowl that use the lake. If you just listen to the butt hurt coonasses then I get your side. But talk to any of the landowners and their plans for the water and land and it’s a completely different story. The plan in place and working to put into motion is awesome. They have faced ruined lives and burned camps for this so I’d say the stakes are high for them to do this. If the public would have simply policed themselves better and treated the already private lands with more respect they wouldn’t have pulled this card is my understanding. Guess lab is ok with the government taking his land and letting shitty people ruin what used to be a great place to hunt and manage waterfowl.

I’m sure there will be some major opportunities for the landowners with conservation easements and different incentives, as well as income from leases. It is always interesting to see how hardcore conservative people can be on here until it comes to public land. Then people change their tune real quick (don’t take that as me being against public land). If what Jab says is true, then those private landowners should get their land back, plain and simple.

I agree the landowners should be paid. This is one complicated mess and it will be interesting to see how it pans out. Hopefully the habitat will be kept in tact regardless of which way it goes.

By the way I am not against the landowners getting paid as a matter of fact Louisiana should have paid them decades ago when the money was appropriated.
