squirrel hunting this afternoon and was in the middle of stepping over a cedar log when I noticed this guy up under it. Right on the McCormick/Greenwood line. First one I’ve ever seen up this way.

Global warming.
Cool.
I can honestly say I have never seen 1 on my place in McCormick. As a matter of fact, I have only.ever seen 2 snakes there in my 40+ years of walking those woods. 1 was a black snake inside the house. I thought my mom and kids were playing a trick on me, it was laid out across the threshold leading into the kitchen. He was so shiny it looked to be fake. That is until it moved. Out the house I went. Not a big fan of snakes but he was the prettiest 1 I have ever seen. I am sure there are rattlers out there but I have never seen 1.

My dad used to let me cut school (HS) to go down camping and deer hunting in Modoc. It opened earlier there than it did here and every year I'd cut school and me and him would spend a few days camping and hunting down there. The high schools down there used to close on opening day. We would eat at Rusty's one night each year. Hamburger steak smothered in onions was $1.50 tea included. I swear those hamburger steaks were 2" thick and they pretty much covered a 9" dinner plate. No way I could have finished one if I hadn't spent all day sitting in a deer stand with nothing to eat. Fun times.
Never saw any rattlers though. Course that was back before Glowball Warming.
The Elites don't fear the tall nails, government possesses both the will and the means to crush those folks. What the Elites do fear (or should fear) are the quiet men and women, with low profiles, hard hearts, long memories, and detailed target folders for action as they choose.
"I here repeat, & would willingly proclaim, my unmitigated hatred to Yankee rule—to all political, social and business connections with Yankees, & to the perfidious, malignant, & vile Yankee race."
I was taught in Boyscouts to step on logs instead of over them because a snake might be laying up on the other side. To this day, I've never seen a snake laying beside a log but I still step on the log, just in case.
I walked all around a Timber Rattler while filling a feeder a few years ago. I finally noticed him all coiled up within inches of where I had been stepping in my Crocs. It was just dumb luck I didn't actually step right on him. I've had a truce with the snakes at my place and they have cut me breaks on occasion.
In my experience, Timber Rattlers are usually pretty reluctant to strike. I brought one home in a cage once to use to train my dogs some snake avoidance. I tried to feed him a pet shop mouse and eventually had to remove the mouse to keep him from pestering the snake.

This is a Crotalus horridus, aka timber aka canebrake. I can count on one hand the verified sightings in Greenwood county over the last 20 years.
Hunting outside the box
Good on you for letting it pass.

Couple of years ago there were a few that I know of spotted in the 96/Epworth area of Greenwood. I've yet to see one.
