I got the invite to some property next year but it is some rough terrain. Just curious how that part of the state deer herd is ? Worth the $400 out of state license ?

Depends on what 400$ means to you.
Lets say, I don't want to go to KY to shoot a doe or a spiker.
If you’re going for a road trip and good times do it.
If you’re doing it because it’s an easy ~130” deer there are better places than SE KY to spend $400 against that goal.
I’d go for the experience. Surely that’s worth $400.
No guarantees in hunting.
How much property? Both archery and rifle? Can you access the ridges with an ATV? How often could you hunt?

It is family land. 1000+ and I can hunt all year, saying that my wife will allow me to leave her and the kids that often! I would be alone so it would just be the for the solo experience. I have always wanted to go so I will probably do it. I am not looking for an easy buck, just curious what that area typically produces being that its such mountain terrain. I have never seen the land so I will try to get up in the summer and use the atv to explore.
I would do archery only because rifle is such a short season and each weapon is about a $250 tag

Big deer there and elk too
What county?
I’d focus my time Oct. 30- Nov. 20....your tag is good for either archery or gun, there are not separate tags.
It’s been a 1 buck state for a long time.....shoot what you want to & have fun.
1000 acres to yourself in the mountains?? GO.
Buy a camper and take the whole family.
You don’t want to go. Rough terrain. Few deer. Plus you’d wind up in a hollow you don’t belong in and come up missing.
Give me the contact info and I’ll gladly take one for the team. Walking hills is hard. You shouldn’t have to be treated like that.

Exactly, gun season starts nov 9 So I was hoping to get up before that starts and more people are pushing deer around. The one buck is nice but that’s what had me wondering if it was that way because the bucks are very few, or they just have tighter restrictions than SC. I know it is called hunting for a reason, just new area to me.
I was going to go to WI for the rut with some natives who know the area. But this came up and I would be able to hunt on private land instead of public, plus it’s closer. Trying to weigh which trip I want to do.

Wife let you? Don't get me started
"They are who we thought they were"
You can dress a fat chick up, but you cant fix stupid
Have hunted western KY every year for probably the past 10 years. Have even hunted central KY one year.
I do know that eastern KY doesn’t have the same deer numbers as central and western Ky and have different bag limits for does. Also EHD has been found in numerous KY counties and Pike county being one of the hardest hit. I don’t no how the deer herd would be there after this outbreak. But It’s a different world and you have no telling what you’ll see once that light switch flips on and big bucks get on their feet.
It will take you some time to get it figured all out. Just find a tree and enjoy it. You’re likely to see more deer from 8-2 than you will at sunrise and sunset. Completely different than here around the house. Deer are also more responsive to calls, scents, and such.
I love it out there and look forward to my 2 week trip out there every November. We usually do a week of bow and a week of rifle but next year I think I will just do stay for the two full weeks of rifle season.
