    Default 2 Questions: '17 Duramax 6.6L Turbo Fuel Economy Question & AFM '18 1500 6.2 gas

I am dialing in on my next vehicle and am leaning toward the '17 6.6L Duramax, but don't know if it will make sense to drive the diesel everyday.

    Question 1:

What can I expect in fuel economy (non-towing) in a '17 duramax 6.6L turbo without tuning and what can I expect after tuning? The numbers online go from 14.4-24 mpg avg. What upgrades/replacement parts are suggested to improve the fuel economy of a stock engine?

    Question 2:

Is the AFM issue the same in all engine sizes? I would prefer the 6.2L gas if I end up not getting the diesel.

Are you planning to put bigger tires on it? I had the 6.2 in a 17 Sierra and really loved it, I would get an average of 16-17 with 34 inch tires and it had plenty of power. Currently have a Duramax with 35s with the Derringer and ram air and do good to get 15. It is crazy what the tuner did for this truck. I did get better mileage with the factory tires but I didn’t leave them on long enough to speak intelligently about it. That Duramax felt very Trucky after having at 6.2. You can’t go wrong with a 6.2

I have had 2 6.2s recently, 2014 & 2016. Both got 12-14 but had no “get up and go “ at highway speed. And forgot jumping over in the left lane and mashing the gas to quickly pass someone. They get the job done but nowhere near compared to the 6.6. Especially if you’re used to driving the diesel it takes a little bit of getting used to not having that power.

The Duramax stock should get you 14-16 running down the highway. And not have any of the shortcomings I listed above.

Never heard anybody with a 6.2 say they didn’t have get up and go...now the 6.0’s are pitiful

I never had a diesel but the test drive on the 6.6 turbo was really impressive.

Maybe I'm mistaken on which one was in those trucks, 6.0 vs 6.2 gas motor in 2500s.

Have you ever heard anybody with a 3/4 ton diesel say, man I really wish I’d have gone with the gas motor?

No, you haven’t, unless they had a sex change......

No, mileage is horrible and have to use premium fuel. I’m back towards GM.
