    Default Need Recommendation on Mechanic

I need a recommendation on a good, trustworthy mechanic for a 1993 Toyota Camary LE V6 Wagon... IN THE ANDERSON AREA, preferably.

The transmission, which I thought was the problem, has been checked out as being fine (for now).

The engine stutters/chokes/hesitated at start-up from a stop only. Once the vehicle gets above about 5-8 mph it runs like a top. Ironically, this ONLY happens in forward (D, 2, or L), but NOT in reverse. In reverse the engine is as smooth as silk, for whatever that means.

Whether related or not, as a cause or a symptom, the tach isn’t reading right. For example, cruising at 45 mph in Over-drive and the tach might show something around 450 rpms... yes, that’s ‘450’. Obviously something isn’t reading or working right.

The mechanic I‘ve worked with in Anderson was previously recommended to me by someone in the auto business, but this guy has been telling me for four years that 1st gear in the tranny was going bad, and that’s now been proven wrong.

A part of this, I think, is that when stopped (or just with your foot off the brake and allowing the car to move ahead slowly) and in low idle, the engine runs rough. Since the tach isn't reading accurately I can't say where it's running, but somehow I believe that's related.

Obviously need someone who understands pre-1996 Toyota’s, and I don’t trust the dealer. Been there, played their game.

    Thanks.

    Duhhh!
When it comes your time to die, be not like those whose hearts are filled with the fear of death, so that when their time comes they weep and pray for a little more time to live their lives over again in a different way. Sing your death song and die like a hero going home. -Tecumseh-

    Killians (James/killzone) or A2Z (Kevin/KRT)

Both will take care of you.

If I was sure any needed parts on a 27 year old vehicle would be readily available and I wouldn’t be stuck in Cola for a day or three I’d make the trip. Would love to have KRT look at it.

Edited to add... Just got off the phone with Steve Killian (father) and will be dropping the car off with them next Tuesday. He says he's got a 67 yr old mechanic who knows these older Toyotas, so here's hoping the solution is a relatively simple and 'low cost' one.

Seems like it's runnin fine for a 1993- just drive the thing. If you must- Fred Flintstone it on takeoff until you get to 5 mph

I'm laughing because that's what my wife's been doing for awhile, but since it's gotten worse now I'm wary of her driving it too much longer without finding a solution. She doesn't want to get rid of the car if she doesn't have to and keeps asking me to keep it running.

In the short run, most of the repairs are cheaper than a newer vehicle, so that's the choice to make as it's needed.

I 100% agree with the cheaper to keep her as long as you're happy with it.

She likes her station wagon as it allows her to haul her Goldens around when she needs to. Right now we're down to one, but we normally have two to three dogs so regular sedans don't cut it, and most SUV's don't get 23-25 mpg. I only let her get her paws on my Land Cruiser if she really needs it, and the mileage is much worse on top of it.
