Default I'm usually pretty sure about Black/Mallard/Mottled ducks...

...but this one has me scratching my head a little. I wrote it down as a mottled duck but I can see things that look like a black, a mallard and a mottled duck in this bird. Maybe a Blottard Duck? I did Photoshop out a hole in his head but it was behind and just under his eye so not in the area where streaking helps with ID.

The white leading edge of the speculum is usually associated with mallards.
The orange-y coloring in the breast and scapular feathers is mottled as is the black in the gape of the bill and buff at the edge of the bill.
The streaking and dark, unlined shoulder, is usually only found on an adult black drake.

I'm in the wing survey so I'm really curious about what USFWS says with this one...

Black mallard cross with only about 5-10% mallard left in it.

Could say the same about it bring a Mallard-mottled hybrid.

I'd vote for this also, but like you would have chalked it up as a Mottled.

yep , things are quite blended indeed. I would have to go Mallard Mottled predominant genome with Black somewhere in the last Gen -being the leading white is only characteristic to Mallard.

You can probably tell by the texture and flavor when you eat it.

The body says black duck but the speculum definitely looks like a mottled. I've seen quite a few Mottled with white on both sides of the speculum, the neck is a lot more marked up then a mottled and the gape doesn't look as pronounced.

Where it was killed would probably help lean one way or another, could be black /mottled hybrid or could have all 3, it's a tough one.

Well, I just got the wing survey results and it says the bird in the original post is an Adult Mottled Duck...

But, the same wing survey says the bird pictured below I killed a couple of days earlier was an an Immature (Domestic) Mallard hen...

I can't stop thinking about you photoshopping a pellet hole out of a picture enough to analyze the species.
