Default Growing Christmas trees in McCormick

I have a few small areas on my place that are cleared and thought it would be cool to plant a few Christmas trees. What tree, if any, would do good in the red clay? Any local supplier for Christmas tree saplings?

Clark’s hill tree farm had several 1-2’ in pots 2 weeks ago and I’d assume they still do. I’d grow whatever they grow.

White pines, Virginia Pines, or Leyland Cyprus. You can prune any of those to make beautiful Christmas Trees. They make a product called “Greenzit” that you can spray in the pines to get them a rich dark green. Frazier Firs do not grow well here. My dad has grown them my whole life. Used to sell them, now just gives them away as a hobby.

My place is about 3 miles before you get to the big white house that leads to Troy.

Cedar. Christmas smells like cedar. Cedar is indigenous in McCormick.

Cut a cedar down in a pasture for a Christmas tree after I was first married. It was nice and smelled great. After about a week the house was filled with some moth/ fly like critters. I got to lookin at the tree and saw three different egg sacks that had hatched in the warmth. It’s funny now , but not so much then.

How big are your spots to plant? I would plant blueberries in one. A little costly on the front end, but they will be around a lot longer than the Christmas trees. Plant 10 bushes a year for the next 5 years and you will have a great crop in 4 or 5 years that gets better and better.
