Default Are neck shots ethical for the average hunter

I've only shot one deer in the neck, I get more pleasure shooting them in the boiler room. Myself and another guy were having a debate on that topic today. I figured I would see what the folks on here think. God help me for that!!

The average deer hunter is lucky to hit a punkin at 150 yards- what do you think? My answer is NO

I agree, which I'm sure we will catch hell on. A member on here shot a nice buck that was barely alive, which someone had "neck shot" a week or two before. I will do everything in my power not to wound a deer and not risking a neck shot is one of the steps I take.

deer on a corn pile at 50 yds w a 30 caliber rifle and scope on a rest in a stand vs a deer at 180 walking and you are slipping through the woods and breathing heavy and brace off standing on a pine tree. too many variables to make blanket dogmatic assertions.

Ok, I guess I know less about deer hunting and rifles than i thought. Y’all making short shots like 100-150 yards seem far. I talk to guys talking about shooting groups at 500+. My stepdad shot nothing but neck shots, I watched him shoot 300+ yard shots all the time. My rifle hunting knowledge is very limited, most deer I have killed are with shotgun or bow.
I don't belive in miracles, I rely on them.

    This.

I tend to play it safe and go for the heart. Any large caliber rifle to the chest cavity is going to be devastating with the expansion of bone impact and vitals all around.

I mentioned on here before that I had a 150yd headshot (I understand, not a neck shot) go sideways once and since that occurrence, out of respect for the deer I have opted for center mass shots most of the time. Not fun when you shoot only the lower jaw off one and it is a giant bloodbath because the deer is still very alive spewing blood with every breath while running around from you in thick woods in the dark.
I had a friend who used to always try neck shots and lost many deer doing so. Center mass just seems to be the default easy answer.

What's the highest percentage kill shot with the largest margin of error for a kill, the head, neck or heart / lung?

I'm a heart / lung shooter myself. I've seen jaws blown off deer and it was ugly.... I have also seen a deer leg nearly blown off by misplaced heart / lung shots. Aim small / miss small

Free hand I would think no, with a good steady rest, accurate rifle in the hands of someone that shoots more than to just check if their scope is on before deer season sure. But I'm a lung shooter myself and mostly bow hunt so . . .
