    Default Interesting

One of the most powerful members of a badly divided University of South Carolina board of trustees is courting former Gamecock football great Brad Edwards as a possible replacement for embattled South Carolina athletics director Ray Tanner, multiple sources familiar with the situation have confirmed to this news outlet.

However, it is not immediately clear whether the influential trustee – Eddie Floyd of Florence, S.C. – will be able to win sufficient support for the move from his fellow board members, who are still at each other’s throats following a divisive, highly politicized presidential selection process.

In a recent post urging the termination of Tanner, we noted the University was “a glorified goat rodeo at the moment, with its governing board bitterly divided and its new president entering under a cloud of controversy.”

And whether you like retired U.S. Army general Robert Caslen or not, there is no denying the University has self-administered a major black eye as a result of his hiring – not to mention invited serious accreditation issues.

This lingering dysfunction could benefit both Tanner and struggling fourth-year head coach Will Mushchamp, the latter of whom probably would have been fired by now were it not for his massive $22 million buyout (which drops modestly to $18.6 million at the end of the year).

That is a hefty chunk of change for a coach whose program is currently in free fall …

This the same BOT that could not agree on who to hire as President and had to let the GOVERNOR of SC influence that decision for his buddy

Hell may as well call up McMaster and ask him what they should do

Title of this thread is extremely misleading.
When it comes your time to die, be not like those whose hearts are filled with the fear of death, so that when their time comes they weep and pray for a little more time to live their lives over again in a different way. Sing your death song and die like a hero going home. -Tecumseh-

More of the same at South Carolina.

Tanner got the job because he won two titles in baseball. That's not working out so now let's try the guy who got a pick six against Clemson a few decades ago.

U5C is criminally dumb if they don't bring in an experienced, connected AD at this point. Connection to U5C not required, and maybe even not preferred.

Y’all need an AD who looks at the big picture and runs it like a business, the way it should be. You don’t need someone with a connection or a Sakkerliner man. That doesn’t work, just look at the left coast USC for validation of that. If you’re going to hire a coach, get a younger guy that’s got something to prove and take your lumps as he develops and learns.

Though I can say I like where your program is headed at present.
Yeah, but do you consider a dog to be a filthy animal? I wouldn't go so far as to call a dog filthy but they're definitely dirty. But, a dog's got personality. Personality goes a long way.

An athletic department is a business wrapped in a nonprofit charity. It has to be run as a business without allegiances and emotions. All the while, placating a fan base that donates money.

I dont know Brad Edwards, nor do I know his background. Unless he has about 20 years of Athletic Department management experience, if you hire that guy, you are dumber than i give you credit for. Yall have dug a hole that is going to take a hard nosed professional to dig you out of.

But please by all means keep digging. I will even donate a shovel to the gamecock club

Word on the street is that Muschamp would like to be the defensive coordinator at Clemson when Venables leaves...

The trustees have become dysfunctional this is good for Tanner, Muschamp and Clemson. Bad for the SC taxpayer and USC students.

Brad has exactly 20 years of Athletic Department management experience. 7 as assistant at USC followed by 3 AD jobs at smaller schools. He is good people, hates the hell out of Clemson, and is a smart guy. However, we need a real son of a bitch to come clean this mess up and I am not sure that is Brad...

Edwards has experience, but we need an outsider. Eric Hyman was an asshole, but we another one of those.

Actually, just bring me an AD who is not allowed any interaction with the BOT. They go off of what feels good and who bows down to them.

Muschamp was a bad hire by what appears will be a failed experiment of an AD. At this point, I think you have to either Fire Tanner, and let the new AD fire Muschamp and make his hire, or give Muschamp some time. He can sell the product that SC has about as well as anyone. How honest are fans about what SC has to sell? ANy coach that you would want is not going to commit the career suicide that would be coming to SC right now under Tanner.

I also listen to some 107.5, and it seems that folks want the OC gone. With SC's schedule, if you had been told before the year that Bentley would be lost for the year, what would your offensive expectations have been? Also, as bad as the offense has been, you have to give Roper credit for scheming Shi Smith wide ass open to win the NC game, and Edwards wide ass open to win the App game. Bentley threw it in the seats and Hillinski threw it in the bushes.

It sure seems like a long time ago that U of SC gave out glasses in Celebration of Muschamp

Let me speak from some experience here. Step one is get a new AD.

Auburn stuck with Jay Jacobs too long. He was terrible. Just awful. Worst AD we ever had. His last little middle finger on the way out the door was to give Guess Malzahn that stupid contract extension for doing the job for which he was already well payed. All because Arkansas showed interest in him.

Letting Tanner handle this is a mistake. It's his mess and he won't clean it up. It'll get swept under the rug and the song remains the same.

Get a new AD and let him/her clean house.

You would have thought that the BOT would have fired Tanner the day he walked in there with that idiotic $19 million dollar buyout for Will Muschamp. Nobody wanted to hire that guy at that time. Hell, most sane people didn't want to hire him after his Florida fiasco. I guess they were too busy shooting hawks to protect their tamie quail and such. At least some of them seem to have woken up now and realize that there is an actual problem. Their ability to handle it correctly? I give them one chance in three...

I heard Tanner on the radio the Wednesday after the Florida game. How he handled himself was telling.

Instead of showing some actual leadership by making a brief statement on the officiating and how they had moved on, he spent an entire segment or more complaining. I'd go as far as to say he was whining because he sounded pretty emotional. The most damning thing to me is he admitted he went into the discussions with SEC leadership with a closed mind regarding any potential outcome. He said he knew going in he was not going to be happy with the outcome regardless of what the SEC officials said/offered.

I realize he was upset and he had a right to be. But being a good leader means setting a good example, which he did not do that week.

I don't think the QB coach at NC State had much to do with those plays.
