Default discussion on the relative merits of shotgun loads

    I know its been discussed....

Looking to buy some bulk ammo. I have the ability to get some 1oz, 7.5s for the 12ga.

I am of the opinion that 1 1/8 oz of #8s would be a better choice for sporting clays.

What does the peanut gallery say? if you could have a choice between 1oz of 7.5s or 1 1/8oz of 8s for a 12ga

same discussion on a 20 but 1oz loads only
    and the 12 cant be 1 1/4.

    go

I think 1 1/8 oz loads are better for doves too. That's what I would go with.

sporting clays - heavy 8's also great for doves. About 150 more pellets than the 1oz 7 1/2

Default discussion on the relative merits of shotgun loads

This is all I buy, and I buy them by the pallet. The boys normally shoot 7.5’s in trap, 8’s in skeet, and a mix in sporting. I honestly don’t think it matters as much as people want it to.

I like the 1 oz loads, especially for the boys. They’ve never complained about recoil, but I’m a believer that recoil is cumulative, and the recoil from that heavier load will eventually cause problems, especially if you’re shooting a lot.....

Shoot what you are confident in and are comfortable shooting. Everyone is different when it comes to recoil. It doesn't bother me at all. So I shoot 1 1/8 ounce loads for all my sporting competition.

However, you will find this interesting. The guy who won the world sporting Championship this year shoots 1 ounce of #8's. The guy that won the US Open was shooting 1 ounce 7.5's.

What you shoot isn't nearly as important as you might think. How you move the gun is.

I've settled on Remington Nitros. The load I shoot is 1 1/8 ounce loads at 1235 fps. They will do what I need them to do. More importantly, they eject well out of my gun, recoil is manageable, I never have FTF loads and they are easy to find.

Go with the highest brass you can find. Higher the brass higher the power.

Shoot whatever George Digweed is shooting. Used to be 1 oz of 7.5 Gamebores @ 1450 FPS

That Gamebore load is closer to 1250 fps. In Europe they measure MV at the the muzzle, US standards are 3 feet from the muzzle.

And when George competes in the US, he shoots 1 1/8 ounce loads. In England they are restricted at 1 ounce. Richard Faulds also shoots 1 1/8 ounce loads. When we spoke at the World Championship this year he said he shoots 1 1/8 loads here because its allowed and his fellow competitors use 1 1/8. His words were "I'm not leaving anything on the table at a World Championship"

And the Brits love high brass shells for some reason. All the European premium loads are high brass or what they refer to as T4's.

26 world Championship titles...yeah I would say he's pretty dang good. I've watched him shoot and its amazing he can move a gun as well as he does with all that girth. Unfortunately health and age are catching up to him and he isn't anywhere close to what he was 10 years ago. He didn't even come to the World Championship this year. Faulds is still getting after it though.

First man to ever shoot 100 in a World Championship. Also still holds the record for longest broken airborne clay with a shotgun. ( IIRC) .. over 100 yards or some crazy distance

High brass #9 20 gauge is a bad deal for doves. I cannot remember if it is 1 oz or 1 1/8
