They have, I actually like Alton Brown.. I dont like many cooking personalities, but I like him.

I whisk still.. but half the time I'm not needing a dark roux

Okra is vile. I’d rather eat a sandwich with bacon on it then eat that nasty, slimy stuff. And don’t even get me started on how terrible sweet potatoes are. Makes my skin crawl just thinking about those tubers from hell.

    I just can’t...

Part of adding the okra is thicken the gumbo, although I have seen someone use pickled okra (no slime)!and then add filé powder to thicken it.

Fried is about the only way it is palatable and even then that is a stretch.

If you don't like Okra, Bacon or Sweet Taters, you must be a damn Yankee. Not much better than Stewed Okra and 'maters, or Sweet Potato Fries.

Listen to your elders. Not because they are always right but because they have more experiences of being wrong.

    There is gumbo
    Then there is okra gumbo
and then there is file' gumbo

I don't put much okra in mine but I like the thickening agent it is and the little okra seeds that boil out in mine

There is gumbo. And gumbo has okra. Gumbo's roots in Africa are made with a variety of okra and they would actually put it in the.pot whole.

Maybe so. I just know this isn't some.new technique. I whisk. I'll get started here soon, I make 8-10 gallons every year for Christmas gifts.

WK, I need some oysters for Thanksgiving if you are bringing any to Camden. Only need a bushel, but would also take a quart jar of shucked as well if you know anyone still doing it on the island...

Honestly I'm probably not coming up. Whole family does Thanksgiving in Edisto. I'll keep you posted though.

10-4. Thanks. I am sure I can get something decent in Greenville, but thought I would give it a shot...

I don't know who Tim Fisk used to get those jars of shucked from, but damn they were sweet...
