    Default Rank because of soil?

    45 acre impoundment.

30ish acres of corn, the remainder is good moist soil plants.
Really couldn’t be happier with the plant response.

But one tiny little area in the pond is catching my attention.

For the last 2 seasons, during flood up, I notice that this 100 x 200ft area is strange.
Water is jet black and smells rank.
Back off it 40 yds and clear water, no smell.

There was an old home site near this area, but it would’ve been torn down long ago.
I’m thinking pre-septic tank era. The bottles and other homesite debri date it around late 1800s-early 1900s.

Soil seems fine when dry and disked and the smartweed, panicum, and barnyard grass grows good there.

    Any ideas?

Could be where they piled and burned stumps and debris when they were building the pond and the charing in the soil is staining the water?

Abandoned old homesite? Yup, the hag used to ride there. I'd steer clear.

Maybe an area where someone buried slaughtered animals over a long period of time?

Maybe it’s an oil seep. If so, I’ll be collecting my finder’s fee.

Aerobic and Anaerobic bacteria would have finished it's job many moons ago, I doubt it's septic or an animal burial site. An environmental impact engineer could figure it out, probably in exchange for a hunt or two.

It goes away after a few weeks.

    Just got me perplexed.

I would think something organic since you note a rank smell and that it disappears. Possibly a capped bog of some sort no pun intended, such as an old bay that completely filled in over geological time with large quants of organics maybe?

describe the rank smell. sewage, rotten eggs, sulfur...

    any oil sheens?

    what kind of soils?

does that area stay wet when the field is not flooded?

PM your address and I'll mail you a few test strips. It will not solve the mystery, but will give me some more information on what it's not.

Smells like rotting vegetation, even though it’s not. The area has been sprayed and mowed weeks prior to flooding.

I hadn’t thought about an old bay being there.
    Valid Point Strick.

Very likely that Strick is correct.

Does the water bubble up a lot when you walk through this area?

Haven’t walked through it, but will now that you mention it.

It’s not in a high traffic (ducks) area.

I am going with capped Pocosin , a very old one, l a man ought to be careful just walking out across one. I have been chest deep all of a sudden in a pretty dry area, you know the drill.

I can put it on some Lidar and if it’s a old bay you will see it. I bet that’s what it is.
