    I can't stress the importance of soil testing and only planting where you have good soil. We learned the hard way. I have two year old sawtooths and chinese chestnuts that are much larger and healthier than sixyear olds planted in inferior soil.

    Yes sir. My soil changes every 50 ft it seems. Surprisingly rich in color though considering the top of the hill where my house sits is pure sand. Soil tests and amendments are on the short list.

    Shumard is my favorite native oak on our place.
    They are however a specialist and extremely site specific trees.

    Don't leave out Willow Oak as a possibility.....my personal favorite in the Oak family. It grows fairly fast and produces a smaller acorn.
