New coat

In the market for a new waterfowling coat. I’ve had a bunch of hunting coats over the years, but always go back to a tried and true Cabela’s coat. I’ve had a couple of Drake coats and DO NOT want another, so please save the Drake recommendation. Looking at a Sitka Duck Oven, but it appears to be a mid layer with little/no waterproofing. What say y’all?

A waxed coat and a wool liner. You’ll spend just as much as you would on a Sitka, but without looking like the military camo pattern of some African country.

I have a duck oven and it’s awesome.....you’ll need a shell over if it’s wet.

There’s a reason that folks have used waxed cotton and wool as long as they have.


And....

You don’t have to look like everybody else at the ramp with Sitka and Drake.

I have tried a variety of jackets most are warm or I can layer. Getting wet has always been an issue. I have not had a jacket that keeps me completely dry when it rains or on a rough boat ride. Just made a purchase on a neoprene jacket for this year.

I'll have to admit, that was an old lighter weight barbour waxed wading jacket... I have a few, my main hunting is a heavier solway.. I wore that light weight one hunting in the pouring ass rain, like pouring for a solid six or seven hours one morning when that front moved in on us last year.. I was drenched. I'm talking water logged my body was hurting wet. The wax was pretty thin on it though. You have to keep up with those things.

Those duck buster chokes might give you a slight advantage, but not much. Plus, I know you have a Sitka vest on under that Barbour.

I don't own any Sitka. I was recently hemmed in by a herd of Michigan yankees who get out and kill lots of shit. They swore by it. I think the comment that swayed me was "They did what Patagonia did, only they did it for hunters."

I remember Salty Nut telling me about Sitka like 15 years ago at a Duck Run...

I do have a few of their things. I love those shirts, they're the zip up fluffy lined ones, mid weight pretty sure. I'm going through trying to find a few other things this year, I honestly hate some of those newer fabrics.

I bought one of those banded waterproof hoodies. It works well. If it raining real hard I put on my browning duck commander jacket. My old man bought me that thing when I was 16 and it still keeps me pretty dry.
