Your setup will depend on where you fish. If you want a heaver there really isn't a better option off the shelf option than the Daiwa Ballistic Tournament 13' unless you want to get a custom made blank. I prefer the 35 as it throws a 6 and 8oz really well with bait. Reels are debatable but I really find it hard to beat a Daiwa Saltist BG 30H with star drag (no lever for me). The absolute last thing I would spool a setup like this with is braid but that is b/c of where I'm fishing which takes me back to the first question that has to be answered (in my opinion). Where will you be using this setup? This is my OBX combo and I've never seen the need for it on a SC beach. I've got lots of other setups as well. Including the Daiwa Ballistic 13' in the 33 model with a Blue Yonder reel. I still prefer the 35.

I've surf fished more this year than any in the past. Its fun, relaxing, and change of pace from boat fishing. We still ride the boat to surf fishing spots.

Cobia and tarpon not all the way out of the question but getting late in the year. I was talking to a buddy this weekend who hooked 3 tarpon this year surf fishing for big red drum.

Pompano flavor helps BudLites taste better in my opinion!

I love surf fishing. In it simple form it’s fun and relaxing and can produce major league fish.

Big drum are now in the surf, most people with "the proper setup" over throw them.
Very good chance that is what you encountered. Skate or shark if not.
