Default Running from a mineral block

Have you ever seen a deer spook from a mineral block? Hoping to have my 9yo get his first...buck walks out and I tell him to hold his shot thinking the buck would stop and lick the block for a good shot. Instead the deer gets to the block, spooks like hell and runs back to where he came from.

I did put the block out today but I’ve had one in the same spot all season. And pretty sure I had enough cover up on my boots that he didn’t run from my scent. I mean as soon as he got to the block he was gone.

What did you handle the block with?

Never touched it. Cut the wrapper off and removed without ever touching the block.

It’s unfortunate either way. Little fella can’t catch a break.

He smelled you. Spraying your boots does nothing for human odor.

Smelled you. Doesn’t matter how you handled it it had your scent on it and around it. Go back after this rain moves through, you’ll be good then.
Yeah, but do you consider a dog to be a filthy animal? I wouldn't go so far as to call a dog filthy but they're definitely dirty. But, a dog's got personality. Personality goes a long way.

All I can say is that my experience over the years has shown me that I need to put out a new block while the old one has several weeks left in it as the deer will normally position themselves to avoid the new block until the weather has ‘conditioned’ it for upwards of a month. It’s been rare for any deer to touch a new block in the first few weeks.

Whether it’s my smell on the new block, despite trying to be careful along with watering down the new one, or they just don’t like fresh blocks is something I haven’t bothered to try to figure out.

My dog took a growler 5 yards from a trophy rock when I was pulling cards. Next card pull showed deer on that block less than an hour after we left.

Trying to figure these goofy critters out is like trying to tell somebody where space ends. It'll drive you mad.

    ^this

deer do weird shit. little young deer do stupid shit. I've seen a buttonhead roll around in a wood chip pile for 20min. I also saw a buttonhead try to fight a 6pt.

Deer are gonna deer. Do you people feel confident with the "he smelled you" bullshit? Because you aren't necessarily right. Just sayin'.

Go sit in tree. Wait on deer. Shoot deer. Repeat. Its not that complicated with a rifle....

and I'll add....we got this dude that used to be on here that liked to think about shooting deer's antlers off.

Well, he really didnt like people peeing near his stands. So, I put up a camera and pee'd in a scrape. Deer loved it.

    Ergo, deer do weird shit.

I agree with Glenn and 2th. Scent is a weird thing to try to figure out when it comes to deer. It definitely throws up some sort of red flag for them, but they don’t necessarily spook and run into hiding
