    Default Flying Squirrel

I spend as much time as possible in the woods and have only seen a handful of flying squirrels, the last one being probably twenty years ago. I was sitting on my porch in a fairly heavily treed neighborhood and noticed something in my bluebird house. I’ve lived here for years and never had any idea they were around. I’ve only ever seen him outside the house once for a split second right at dark but he peeks out occasionally for a photo. The bird house is only a few feet from the porch and he’ll let me walk right up to him to get a picture. EC78E07A-DF17-4C33-8424-CD3D4824E1A3.jpeg

There is a pretty good population of them at the lease.

When I was little, we had a family living in one of our bird houses. They were so cool to watch.
I take an PLB in the shower with me. Can't ever be too safe.

My buddy hung up an old camo shirt in his stand and for the past 3 years it made a nest in the shirt pocket.

They’re cool critters, I personally don’t shoot them but Jake got hold of this one before I could stop him. We come across them a few times per season. This particular day there were two in a hole in the ground at the base of an oak tree but most times they’re in a dead pine, 12’ or so tall with the bark falling off

Not sure if he still does or not but Irving Witt, the call maker, had a pet flying squirrel at one time

They are active at night. Go out with your flash light and shine it up in the trees. You will see their eyes.

There were a few at my parents house. They stayed in some big water oaks that were in their yard. Farm Bureau made them cut the trees down, because they were to close to the house. We haven't seen any since. They were fun to watch gliding from tree to tree, just before dark.

I used to have one as a pet. Her name was Rocket and she was as tame as any wild creature I've ever seen. I caught her hopping across my parent's backyard in Greenville. I thought it was frog the way she was jumping around. Pecans and sunflower seeds brought her around pretty quickly. Once she figured out nobody was going to hurt her she was fearless. She would run up the curtains and swoop down on my Border Collie. If I gave her too many sunflower seeds she'd run down my shirt and try to hide them in my belly button. She would ride around in my shirt pocket sometimes but her favorite place was inside the collar of my shirt.

I brought her to work when I was working at Cleveland Park Vet Clinic in Travelers Rest. Our cute hippy groomer girl thought she was adorable until she ran down her no-bra-underneath scrub top. I was torn between trying to help get a flying skwerl out of her shirt and not getting slapped.

The only person she ever bit was my then girlfriend now wife. She absolutely hated being in a cage and couldn't stand for you to "cup" her in your hands. The girlfriend tried to cup her and put her in a cage. Rocket bit the shit out of her thumb and then ran up the curtains and scolded her.

Somebody on this site has that pic of me in my early 20s holding the red one.

Wish I had a flying squirrel.
Be proactive about improving public waterfowl habitat in South Carolina. It's not going to happen by itself, and our help is needed. We have the potential to winter thousands of waterfowl on public grounds if we fight for it.

I've never seen one before, at least that I'm aware of. They seem like cool little animals though
