    Default Moist soil food plot

First off Ive NEVER planted food for deer. I had the fortune of growing up on a dairy farm and hunting large corn, alfalfa, and soybean fields. My new place is all hay and will be slowly converted to deer food, what I dont pasture.

Ive had no time for that this year but I just plowed and disked up a small pocket in a low spot in the woods next to a watering hole. Soil is very damp and black all summer but it never hold water. I wont soil test until this winter. Any suggestions as to whats best to spread and rake in?

Thats fine. Im looking more for what NOT to plant. Mind you this is a tiny piece, maybe 1/2 acre. Think "kill plot".

Hay fields will get lime this winter so I will soil test before that.

Are you confident for AWP in heavy soils?

Durano clover grows good and in moist (not wet) soil. It produces a lot of forage and last for several years if maintained.

A mix of clover and any cereal grain. Since you’re only doing 1/2ac I doubt you’re breaking out the drill. Disc the ground (without sinking the tractor) and broadcast oats, Drag smooth, broadcast the clover, drag again. 4 bags of 10-10-10 and 4 bags of soluCal (again, I doubt you’re pulling a soil sample for 1/2ac). Pray for rain and throw an extra $20 in the offering plate on Sunday if you get it the day after planting.

Come back in March-April to mow the plot and see how much clover you’ve got. If the voluntary grain and weeds are thick spray arrest on it. Mow a few times before rains and you’ll get a thick stand of clover.

I would also throw out some greens for late season. My low spots that hold moisture always have some pretty pulling in deer.

I have never had a problem, and I am pretty sure my place ranks up there with some of the wettest of soils.

If he is talking under water, I guess rice is the best bet. I've never had deer mess with my rice much though.
