Car ships have stability issues. That ship had issues at the dock per someone I know. They got underway & passed an inbound ship & the stability went to hell. Pilot made the decision to ground the ship, a fire broke out. They can hear tapping on the hull still from the people trapped. Donjon Marine out of NJ won the salvage contract.

Ted the roros rely on a series of pumps to transfer ballast quickly to keep them stable correct?

Glad it happened in the channel and not 100 mi offshore or in the middle of the Atlantic

This link was posted on THT and is sort of relative to the ship in question posted above. It's about marine salvage. It is sort of long, but its a good read.

Wonder if the cars were Mercedes or BMW's, doesn't matter the shipping line just bought all 4000 of them.

I am amazed how clean the bottom of the freighter hull appears to be. I would have thought there would have some evidence of fouling by marine growth.

I wonder if it is the anti-fouling paint or the fact now a days the ships are almost always under way? If it is the paint, I want to know what they are using and where to get it.

Even at just $40k each it would come out to $160,000,000

There are conflicting reports, was the pilot onboard? There is an unusually low amount of info coming out about causation. I would say if the center of gravity was that high, they are lucky they capsized in shallow water near shore. MG

I heard a report that the captain grounded the ship intentionally because it was unstable. Also the news said 3 of the 4 crew have been rescued, one still trapped and they cannot get food or water to him.
