Default Anyone use a “light” 300 Win mag load

Have an older gentleman that I eat breakfast with that has asked if I would reload some 300 win mag for him, have the dies so not a problem.

He is wanting a some what light load, he is shooting a Ruger No 1

Never really shot reduced loads but on other hand my loads are not max loads either .

I have plenty of 4831 and 4350 on hand

He picked up a box of 165 gr Sierra’s

I was thinking something between 65-70 gr of 4831.

My Nosler book shows a load of 70 gr 4831 on lower end of load chart, kind of nervous about going much below that

Reason I am asking it seems like some where over the years I have read that too much of a reduced load can create higher pressures than normal. Not positive on the this but for some reason it sticks in my mind.

And YES I will put the correct bullets in this one LOL

Isn’t a light magnum on oxymoron?

I started out low with RL-22 but the rifle didn’t like it, wouldn’t group. I’ve always read that most rifles usually group best approaching max load.

    They call it a .308
Yeah, but do you consider a dog to be a filthy animal? I wouldn't go so far as to call a dog filthy but they're definitely dirty. But, a dog's got personality. Personality goes a long way.

    I tend to agree.

I'm shooting the Hornady Custom light loads in the kids 7mm-08. I was very impressed with the grouping. They make the load for 300 wmag too. Not sure if you can find a recipe that mimics those loads, but might be a place to start.

That reduced recoil load in 7mm-08 leaves a blood trail like I have never seen. My son has killed 5 with them since I bought it for him last year and when they did run, they didn’t make it 50-60 yards but the blood in between was unbelievable and looked like it was a staged horror movie.

I reduce load my 375 h&h with trail boss. It shoots dead nuts with my full power loads out to 100. Its about like a 30-30 maybe hair more. Could do the same thing in the 300

Slow powders don’t work well with reduced loads. H4895 is what you want.

H4895 and 125 grain bullets. I like the nosler BT or AB, just keep speed down with BT and they do well.

Yeah I shoot the Barnes 130’s. They are longer so can be seated further plus hold together at 3700 FPS!!

Looking to load for my 300savage and found quite a bit of info out there showing the 125 BT worked very well at velocities of 2600 to 2800. Much higher than 3000 and it came apart. Seems like a perfect REDUCED velocity bullet for your aims. Don't know if you can load it down that low safely.

Common sense is not a gift. It's a punishment because you have to deal with everyone else who doesn't have it.
