Default SCNDR Bear Island maintenance and repair report

Received this today from SCDNR as to Bear Island:

Bear Island WMA Overview Since January 2019

A minimum of 12,000 linear feet of dike was re-topped. Berms on the inside of the dikes were created as needed.

Areas breeched in previous storms were revisited and maintenance conducted as needed with the trackhoe.

Over 100 miles of dikes were mowed and maintained.

Once re-topped dikes had dried and cured appropriately, they were rotovated and shaped up in order to be able to be driven on.

Dikes with encroaching trees were side cut as needed. Impoundment fields were also cut back to prevent emcroachment of woody vegetation.

Four acres were rotovated to encourage desired moist soil vegetation.

8 acres of Japanese millet and 30 acres of corn were planted and fertilized.

White marsh was sprayed with herbicide to open up 2.7 miles of interior canals.

Sesbania control occurred in impoundments as needed.

At least 485 acres of marsh were control burned.

Noxious vegetation patches (including Phragmities) was sprayed with herbicide as it was discovered.

Erosion damage to dike tops as a result of extreme high hides was repaired in multiple locations.

Repairs were made to two trunks, associated bulkheads and splash pads.

One spillway box and 2 trunks and associated bulkheads were installed.

New flap gate was installed on pipe in Matthews Canal to better manage water levels.

Individual impoundments were monitored and managed to encourage desired aquatic vegetation to benefit waterfowl. Water levels and salinity levels were monitored to get desired vegetative result in each impoundment.

I know Bear Island is the "standard", so just curious has this always been going on to this extent or is this more protectiveness? Once again GREAT WORK!!!

I believe the damage over the last 3 years required more work and resources

Makes sense, hopefully Dorian doesn't undo the repairs

Just got off the phone with them earlier, said no major impacts to cause concerns for migrating birds. This included Santee Delta and Coastal.

Awesome! Nothing like being able to shoot 6 ducks every 3rd year.
    Congrats!

Not true. I swing through about every 8 months. Still mad about our ACE hunt. Haha.
Appreciate the heck out of that!

I feel like that would be fun.

    * read it as walk in marsh hunts first.
