Default Dove season heat and gundogs

How hot is too hot for Fido on a dove hunt?

Signs or symptoms of heat exhaustion?

What to do if you notice these signs?

(I thought I would make one post that’s worth a shit)

Leave the dog at home and pick up your own birds. It’s not like they are out there swimming around in chest deep water.

Oh yeah, and be sure to sit in the shade and keep yourself watered up.

You need a bamboo vest for your dog (make sure it's infused with spf).

If you are a good shot and your dog is obedient you should be ok for an hour or so.

What you don't want is a dog retrieving your birds and every body elses. Or staying out in the field for hours.

Plenty of water is a must. Don't hesitate to put dog back in vehicle with air conditioning running every so often......especially older dogs.

Not Sumter, per se. I was on the south side of the tracks from Ralph though.

Depends on the dog, don’t take your fatass house dog out there on opening day, I’ve seen one die and several have strokes due to the owner. You've got to pay attention.
    If he’s in shape.
    Shade
    Cold water
I use a cooler as a stool on hot days, fill it 1/4 water and 3/4 ice, let it leak in a puddle where he heels. Does a great job at keeping him cool. If he looks like hes getting too hot, i'll make a pile of ice and he will lay on it, and make him stay there until he cools down.

Old age was the only thing that kept my dogs from hunting first season, their old age. Sometimes it's just simplicity that keeps a dog at homes lately.

Cajun couldn't handle the heat of Sept dove hunts. She'd go into cluster seizures I knew this and left her at home for doves.

SW and that dick dude got it figured out....

my boykin lives outside during most days. he will hunt with me. we will both be hot. i'll ask him not to run around too much. he's 1.5.

granted, I have not seen a dog die from heat exhaustion so maybe I'm naive...but my dog is going.

Trust me, yelling "GRIFFIN! GET YOUR ASS BACK OVER HERE" is not something I want to have to ever say.....
