    Default What is it millett..?

Admittedly, I don't know what it is!
It showed up on my place maybe 20 years ago with some Jap. I planted and it has gone wild and naturalized since then.
I'm sure the birds eat it, but it's a pain in the ass when growing rice.
It's not wild millett aka barnyard grass or Jap millett...... Anyone know the species?
It's far more prolific at reseeding than Jap as well....
I call it white millett just because....

But, bo..... it is barnyard grass.

Just a different species (much taller) than the rusty topped species.

It has exploded up here too. Still have oodles of the redtop, but this stuff is LOADED in the impoundments as well.

Lol. I have noticed it on wet edges of corn fields on other tracts over the years, but first time I’ve seen it in the impoundments.

Ducks blistered the redtop barnyard last season, no reason to think they would turn up their nose at this stuff right?

I originally thought it was just the redtop species at an early stage, but as the shorter, red kind began to head out good and mature, the “white” continued to grow upward. In some areas its side by side to the red but not intermixed. It forms a monoculture where it grows.

I, too, have it in my rice and it is definitely prolific. Ricestar will get it I am told, but I am hesitant given the seeds it produces

If I can take a closer look, say this December, I’ll be happy to give you my input.

Is this the same thing? Got it all over this year, especially in my rice. Seed heads are so heavy that it’s falling over in a lot of places.
