    Default Jeep Debate

I've been kicking around the idea of getting a jeep to beat around town in and seeing Daniel's jeep has got me thinking.

    YJ for TJ debate

For YJ you almost need to specify early vs later years as they go from carb to fuel injected.

Round headlights vs rectangle...I get it.

    What else?

    Pro's / Con's

    Sport / Rubicon / Sahara

I'm not looking for an off-road, rock climbing, mud slinging jeep. Just something to ride around town and take to the woods every now and then.

    TJ with a 4.0

Obviously, first and foremost, round headlights. After that the most important thing is the TJ has coil over suspension instead of YJs leaf springs. Not only is the ride significantly better, the capabilities of the two off-road are not even close in stock form.

    TJ Rubicon

They will hold their value. TJ is the last classic Jeep. Unless you find a deal, you will pay through the nose for it. Dont buy when the sun is shining.

Rubicon because you get Dana 44 axles front and back with locking differentials

Sahara has 44 on the rear and 35 on front.

Sport is 35 front and back.

You say you don't want off road, but Dana 44's will support lift kits and larger wheels easier.

    Default Jeep Debate

    Leaf vs Coil
    Carb vs EFI
    258 vs 4.0

    TJ will cost more.
Sport is base- suits most use
Sahara has the upgraded seats/ interior, decals, rear axle
Rubicon has upgraded axles with 4:10's and lockers- off-road beast

I'm biased as I've trashed about every Jeep made. I currently have an 05 TJ Rubicon on 37s about as maxed out as you can get with stock axle housings and engine block. It goes anywhere I want. The 83 Bronco just got a motor and is back In service as a daily. Its comparable to the YJ.

Back to your comment on use- YJ would be fine.
I think that one day the YJ's will bring some money because of the SQ headlights. They will eventually be obsolete and hard to find. (87-95)

Y'all are killing me with these Jeep threads. Both my girls want one as their "first" vehicles. I've always liked/enjoyed Jeeps even with the rough ride.

Fair enough, but it would be worth it.

So many of the jeeps on the market are automatic. You can argue that all day as well. Something tells me if it's an automatic, it's not a jeep. And then there's the, who really wants to fool with changing gears argument.

YJ. 92-95. No such thing as a 96. A "96" is just a left over 95. 97 starts the TJs. YJ with the 4,0. Parts are cheaper. I will introduce you to Jody. He lives right off Bacon Bridge. He has a YJ parts paradise in his back yard. Get a Rubicon lift from Morris 4x4, put on 31 x 10.50s change your clutch slave cylinder from internal to external and youre done. You can get a harness kit to rewire the whole jeep for cheap. I had a 95 and a 92. Get a new spare tire rack. The 1 on the back will pull out if you put on anything heavier than stock, or at least mine did. Change the rear axle to either a dana 44 or a ford 8.8. And then ride it like you stole it.
You wont find a TJ around here for less than $6K. You can get YJs from $3-5K depending on how its built. theres 2 jeep clubs in this area. Get in touch with them if you want to get serious. Some of them will help you get a good deal.

I definitely don't see anything around here worth owning for $5k or under regardless of year and model.

5k will buy a lot of problems. i'd look more in the 8-10k range. Stock TJ 4.0 will do plenty. Get rubicon if you plan to do any difficult wheeling. Run away from rust. Check the coolant and oil.
