    Default Human Capital

South Carolina gets a grade of "F"...keeping company with the likes of MS, LA, NM and WV.

    Human Capital
No factor matters more to businesses than the quality and availability of
labor. Workers represent the largest single cost of doing business, but,
more importantly, they are the source of most innovation and process
improvements that distinguish successful firms from those that are
not successful. Because produced goods have a high degree of value
dependent on each individual worker in a production line or transportation
leg or hub, a uniformly high quality of workers is required. These workers
must possess the ability to understand increasingly complex production
processes that today are mostly managed by computers with specialized
software. The factories, rail yards, distribution facilities, and machine shops
of today are highly technical and complex, and they are dependent on
workers who can work successfully in this environment. Human capital
(especially education) is the most important factor in firm location
decisions. Our human capital measurements include rankings of educational
attainment at the high school and collegiate level, the first-year retention
rate of adults in community and technical colleges, the number of
associates degrees awarded annually on a per capita basis, and the share of
adults enrolled in adult basic education.

That didn't stop Boeing, Volvo, BMW, Michelin, etc. from locating here.

It didn't. Talk to their HR and they'll tell you finding good employees is one of their biggest problems. Part of the problem is quality employees, part of the problem is number of people needed.

Volvo needs to fill 700 jobs — but fewer than 4 percent of applicants meet basic requirements

The IQ of the average SC resident is pretty low.

It's great to have a robust economy, but it was also great not having all these extra people around. The greater Charleston area is to crowded. The problem is; if you have children and utilize public school, you're almost stuck staying in the area. If I could talk my wife into home schooling, we'd be gone in a skinny minute.

The original article isnt flawed. The op only posted one part of the study. If you click on the link you will see that SC leads in some areas that help to entice businesses.

But I agree that our workforce is weak and bringing in industry that has to recruit out of state, at least for high paying jobs, is an issue. But hey it increases the tax base and that is the goal for most politicians.

An A in manufacturing and global reach. I’ll see if I can find the article specific to SC but you will see all other areas sub par and declining. The F in quality of workers is what caught my eye and is pretty telling.

I can promise you these companies would prefer to hire local as incentive to do so is also written into the tax break benefits that encouraged them to come in the beginning, however it is no secret to our labor force as reeltights article suggested. We talk shit about those from up North but many of these companies would not have come to SC without them.

Don't get me started on what's available in the "quality" candidate pool.
