Not a big deer but big enough.
Sometime right around sun rise I played a little tune on the ol poot tube to see if I could holler in a WTBD. I had barely set the call down when I heard a deer run in behind me. I put my hand on my rifle and turned to look and he was at 15 yards and caught my movement. We had a staring contest for about three and a half maybe five seconds before he blew and hauled freight. I sat up there in my tree diaper pouting like a child with my lip run out lamenting the missed opportunity. After a few minutes of self loathing I figured as aggressive as he was MAYBE I could call him back in. So back on the poot tube I went and followed it with some rattlin’. Did that twice over about a 5 minute period. After I finished rattlin the second time I looked up and here he come again right to the base of the tree. Had to let him pass me and shot him at 4 yards almost straight down. He left out looking real unhealthy, hit a cut bank headed onto the neighbors and cut a flip and disappeared. I figured he’d be dead right across the line.
I SEAL Team 6’d it down out the tree and from the shot to where I saw him cross the line was no blood. Walked to the line and looked and there was no blood and no deer. Well here we go.
Headed out to get some cell service to get ahold of the guys who leased the property he ran onto, see if I could get a track dog and maybe solicit an extra set of eyes to help grid if it came to that. No dog trackers were available but they were very helpful. Guy who hunts the lease said I could go track where I needed to. I got ahold of visor Guy and he said he’d come help look. Long story short he and I went in and started a body search. Second loop I hear VG whistle and knew something was up. Sho nuff VG had looped around a brier and honeysuckle tangle and found him. He’d gone a little over 100 yards, bedded up and died. Shot was good. Entered high shoulder on the right side, exited brisket and I guess he was so close the bullet did t have time to expand. It looked like he was poked with a pencil.
Appreciate the help from VG and from the trackers group and their phone tree. They worked hard to find somebody and had they been able to it would have taken them about 5 minutes to find him.
