What kind of water clarity? Maybe a Gopro on a long cane pole would work? You can use a cell phone as a remote screen to see what is down there, find it and dive down to get it.
Listen to your elders. Not because they are always right but because they have more experiences of being wrong.

I'm interested in the clarity and current of the river as well. I can tell you the GoPro underwater and watching wirelessly with a phone won't work. I was all excited to let my family watch my dives in real time from the boat while I was down. It lost connection as soon as I dipped under the water.

little to no current at the moment and the water clarity is iffy. Why I want to try to find it before the next big rain. Bush River upper Murray has little to no current till we get a good rain

How big is the search area where you are sure it is and how deep?

I'm sure that most that view this are just like me...I'd be more than willing to help, but I have nothing to offer.
    Good luck with your quest.

I hate it because I would love to try it and have all the gear but I'm tied up with work and I would have at least 5 hours in drive time just getting there and back.

Would it not be easier just to go get a used part?

I had a Bogagrip yanked out of my hand by a fish years ago. I was anchored in neck deep water. I immediately stripped down and jumped in to find it. The water was too murky to see more than a foot or so. I felt around with my feet and with my hands while holding my breath to no avail. I came back the next day with scuba gear and looked/felt around until my tank started getting floaty. Right before I sucked a vacuum on the tank, I felt something brush my hand. I found the Bogagrip with the fish still attached and alive. I tagged and released the fish.

I knew where the bogagrip was within a couple feet and it still took me about an hour to luck up and find it, and that was a big tool with a fish attached. It's hard for me to get very optimistic about your chances of finding your cav-plate chunk.

In reference to my earlier post about a doel-fin, I think you could add a bolt-on torque tab to the doel-fin, or some other brand of similar cav-plate addition.

Exactly....these motors are blown up all over the place and have used the same running gear for years.

The reality of it DD is; its not like a child or such is missing.
Best bet is to take your boat out to the spot and sit there on Saturday
and every time a boat load of young folks come along, wave them down and
tell them it just happened and you'll give them $20 if they swim around and find it.
Someone with more time and energy than the folks on here will do it just for the challenge
