I just noticed a gas station that is closer to home now has ethanol free 87. I am running a 2002 mercury 40hp, should I stick with the 93 or would 87 be ok ? Maybe this is common, but I haven't seen any stations with 87.

93 non ethanol was replaced by 90 octane a couple years ago. If they were advertising 93 it is probably mis branded.
you sure. I looked at the list and saw quite a bit of 93 options. The station I usually go to even says 93 on the pump.
They still make 93 with ethanol but the only ethanol free options that I’m aware of are 87,89, and 90
Check owners manual. What was the ignition tuned for?

Common sense is not a gift. It's a punishment because you have to deal with everyone else who doesn't have it.
Don’t have the manual but mercury.com said 91+ , guess that solves that.
A stock mercury 40 does not have a high enough compression ratio to benefit from high octane, run 87 all day
