    Default Yute shotgun

Looking for something for my 9yo. I’d like a 28ga but don’t want to pay for the ammo so that puts me in the market for a 20ga I suppose. After speaking with Palmetto Bug I think I’m leaning towards a gas auto. Is there a youth model worth looking at? Don’t really need the gun to grow with him as this will be able to be passed down a couple of times.

    Budget TBD

What should I look at? So far I’ve only glanced at the a400 light compact.

Beretta if anything nice, they did make a 391 also. The 1100 youth really isn't a bad shooting gun, when I had my second kid start shooting I had to look for another.. I bought a Tristar g2 youth, woodgrain 20. Knowing it wouldn't be shot for long, it's gone through several dove shoots and a couple easy summerduck without a problem. I own enough shotguns that they can all grow into, and there isn't one that I would cut down.

My boy has a TriStar 20 and other than having to clean the packing grease out, it hasn't missed a lick. Wasn't going to spend a bunch of money on a youth shotgun.

I bought a youth 11-87 several years ago from someone who’s kid had out grown it. I like the gun, it seems to be all he needs at the moment.

On a side note, I found some reduced recoil 20 ga dove loads at Academy. I let the boy use them for a while when he was shooting a single shot. We tried a few rounds in the 11-87 late last year, but they would not cycle.

Good gun but I don't want to start him out with a pump. He'll think more about pumping than shooting.

I had a LT 20 1100. Great little shotgun. It went thru both of my boys and will go to their sons God willing.

I always start mine out on pumps so they aren’t worried about pulling the trigger as fast as they can and they learn to make every shot count.

I disagree with this thought process...but of course YMMV

he gets one shot, focus on the target, will reload, refocus, and try again next time. Until he can consistently hit what he is aiming at the first time, he doesn't get a 2nd or 3rd shot.

I would suggest an 870 or BPS youth....

I agree with the one shot reload part. My mindset was auto loader, one shell till we got the hang of it. 2 shells then three.

I just picked up a 391 lite from our northern neighbors just to try and it’s too big. And I’m not cutting down something something like that.

    Reeltight,

You can get a spare stock for that Beretta from Coles Gun.
