    Default Quail hatching

About 18 days ago I ordered some coturnix quail eggs and an incubator off Amazon.

Coturnix quail are jumbo size and lay eggs every day. The eggs are a little smaller than a ping pong ball but bigger than a large grape. Supposedly they eat well (bird and egg). Can't speak to that yet.

Looks like my crew is ready to come out now. Never hatched anything besides fish so this is pretty fun for me.

You can see the first crack there in that 2nd pic.

I got 7 so far. They look pretty healthy but so fragile. One has something hanging from what I assume to be his belly. Looks like maybe an umbilical cord. He does not like it. I gave them some water and some food and they are chowing down. My dogs are licking their lips. I imagine the bass would also enjoy one.

Do you have them under a heat lamp? Never raised quail but I imagine it is similar to how you brood baby chicks.

Yea I have em in a rubbermaid tub with a heat lamp over one side. They seem to lay together on the other side so I guess they kinda know what temp to keep themselves.

I feel sort twisted saying this, but a video of your bass eating one would be "cool".

    I feel bad now, sorry.

I've already debated the ethics of this. In the event one is better suited as fish food it's only right I document the event. For the purpose of furthering bass research, of course.

This is the first hatchling from yesterday. About double size. Looks like bird now. More are hatching.

Rodney what's your end goal with these birds?

A few years I raised Georgia giant bobwhites . They would weigh over a pound . Super good eating. A guy a work gave me a bucket of Coturnix quail eggs to hatch out. They were the nastiest things in the world . I got rid of them as soon as I could. They were sicking . I wish you luck with them .

I wanted to try em for eggs. Really I just never hatched anything and wanted to try it out and learn a bit. Pretty fun so far.

Well damn they may end up bass food after all. Do you mean the bird or the egg was nasty?
