Default Having trouble with tilt/trim staying

I was able to get in the water for a quick run in the new (to me) boat before the rain came. I had a good ride except the tilt/trim wouldn’t work well.
I have no problem moving the tilt /trim while sitting in the water, but as soon as I turn the gas and get some speed, the motor keeps trimming back down. It happens quickly too, it’s not like it stayed tilted up and then trims down, it almost instantly trims down as soon as I move.
Any ideas on where to start? When I am at home I can tilt and trim and it will stay. The issue is with the resistance of the moving water.

What kind of boat? What kind of steering?

When it goes down can you bring it back up?

If it’s a steering wheel with controls I’d wonder if you had a short in the shifter???

Could be low on fluid also if you have a seal problem.

Boat is a 1503 high tide with Mercury 40hp 2stroke tiller.

When the motor goes back down, yes I can bring it back up. But once I start moving, it goes back down.

I have never had til/trim so I can google whatever seals your talking about but should I replace all the seals or any specifically I should look at? So I can tell if the leak is coming from there or not? How hard of a DIY is this?

I found that I need to take off some screw and then refill it from there, but is there any way to tell I need more oil other than it coming out of the hole? No peep-hole?

The thrust the motor is generating is pushing it down. Sounds to me like you got some leaking seals that keeps the unit from maintaining proper pressure which keep the motor stationary.

    Second on this.
A fish bites 2 times a day, right before I get to the water, and as soon as my boat gets back on the trailer.

I found two different options on the diagrams. Are either of these what you mean ?

    Pilot Valve Assembly

    or
    Tilt Relief Valve Assembly

Here is the link to the entire diagram if that helps anyone.

I have been working on the boat so I just got back to the motor. I figured out that the trim relay is bad.
Question is, should I replace both or does it matter if I just replace the trim side?

You could replace one, and be fine...until the other goes bad. Could be 3 months, could be 3 years.

So the trim relay is the reason it was falling back down? Because I'm having the same problem on my mud motor that has a mercury tilt and trim unit. I thought it was a leak but no fluid is visible and it's still full.

Yea first I drained the trim fluid and filled it back up with fresh clean fluid. Did nothing.
I had bought a new solenoid, the current one had lots of corrosion so I figured that was it. That didn’t do anything.

Then I got smart and checked the relay. swapped the tilt relay with the trim relay and boom! Mine was going down but not up, so once I swapped it. The motor goes up and not down, so that means that relay is out. Give it a try, might be the answer!

yes it is leaking, from high pressure side to low pressure side of the hydraulic piston or through check valve if it has one

Oh yea, to be clear, mine was not falling down. It just wasn’t moving when I hit the button. If yours is falling then their might be a leak.
