    Default Lab losing hair

Anybody had this problem..?? My lab has recently lost literally 1/4th of it's coat...Mostly on the underside and sides...It looks so bad I'd be ashamed to put a picture on here...She's just turning 2 yrs old...Doesn't seem to be bothering her, not like she's itching or anything...The wife has tried everything she can come up with diet and ointment wise, and nothing changes.

Dog is on a top notch health program, and yes, she has been to the vet about it...The vet didn't seem too concerned and offered nothing for a remedy, just said some labs are prone to that in hot weather and she would be fine later.

I've had labs all my life and never had one look like this.......

I'd get a second opinion. The Vet may be correct.

My lab isn't even a year old and once the weather got hot he started shedding pretty good. Don't think he is/was shedding like it sounds your dog is, but I was pretty impressed. I had a yellow female one time that would shed pretty heavy year round.

Has she lost any hair on her muzzle or around her feet?

No...It's just belly, inner thighs and splotchy up the sides...Down to nothing but skin.

Mine did the same and it was flea allergies. The pill we had her on for fleas wasn't working. Damn dog looked like a baboon on her rear end.

She's on Simparica and Interceptor Plus...I can't find a flea anywhere...

    Might be your problem.

Not sure what you feed but if it’s half good quality don’t give the hound anything but the food from the bag. Maybe allergies?

Edited to add: hold off on anything but it’s food for a week. Then if you see improvement you can pin point what may be causing the problem

Could be the flea meds, food, hereditary. List goes on....

Hypothyroidism can cause heavy hair loss, as can mites. Just something to keep in mind as you work through it.

I’d also get an opinion from a second Vet, but don’t tell them who they’re second-guessing.

    Good luck.

Thanks for all the ideas...Some things suggested here help me to think outside the box.

We've been to the top local vet, but I'm going somewhere else first of the week for a second opinion.

Let her out for an exercise run in the woods with me this morning, and she acts like it doesn't bother her at all...I'm just puzzled.

Ivomec 3cc 3 days in a row as long as the dog doesn’t have heart worms. You can inject it under the skin or down the throat. Don’t use ivomec plus. Nustock works well on promoting new hair growth.

Hell 3cc is what they give dogs with heartworms don't they?

I would absolutely not do the ivomec tx someone recommended and would be looking for a second opinion to rule out cushings, mites, allergies, hypothyroidism and whatever else they may suspect after physical exam. Good luck, don’t kill your dog with ivomec overdose.

.1cc per 10lbs. If a dog has heart worms you can treat with ivomec but you have to slowly increase the amounts to slowly kill off the worms.

    I know, right?
Its not just THIS place, though. The internet makes everyone skittish and a professional, all at the same time....
