With the season being out for almost a month now and my wedding over, I’ve had time to take a breath and realize how fortunate I really am. I went into turkey season with a different mindset this year. It wasn’t about killing everyone I can anymore. This year I slowed down and realized how lucky I am to have what I have. With the recent studies coming in from DNR, it made me realize that at anytime I to may be without birds so let’s plan for the future more. I decided to take it slow and enjoy the hunt instead of making it about the killing. Some of my best hunts this year, the bird wasn’t killed. A big part of that was because it was spent with good friends. My good friend that hunts with me the most lost his mother suddenly before the season. While we weren’t able to get him a bird because his schedule was so busy, the time he and I spent in the woods really took his mind off things for a while. I did however get to watch other friends kill birds that made my season. I was there to witness CCleroy kill his 100th SC bird. And while the after shot fiasco that occurred is what we’ll remember the most (I’m not going into details on the subject but let’s just say it rivaled a TK and Mike video) the fact that I was there for that milestone with him was very cool. The good Lord let me see 7 turkeys die and one missed by a young hunter on his first hunt. It’s time to get ready for next year. We need some rain so I can plant!
