    Default Dog Training Advice

The E-collar thread got me to thinking,
What is the single best piece of advice you've ever been given or have to offer when it comes to training a hunting dog?

Don’t let the dog train you!
    Yup, he's crazy...

like a fox. The dude may be coming in a little too hard and crazy but 90% of everything he says is correct.

Sort of like Toof. But way smarter.

You can even dumb it down to what I've been telling my kids this week.

"Walk the dog, don't let the dog walk you"

It's amazing how many dogs walk their owners when you really sit back and watch. Especially little dogs. Owners follow them around with a 20' leash and act like they are in control.

We doubled the 6' leash on our pup so that my son could get more control over her at 3'

You know the trick of how to wrap the leash around the dog, right?

Not sure what you mean by wrap around the dog.

I flip the leash handle inside out and put it around the neck to cut the leash in half. Im fine to choke up on a leash but a 6 year old struggles to get a firm grip.

Best advice I've got is if you don't have the patience or time is to hire a pro.

Put a young dog in scenarios where it will succeed. If the dog has it bred in them the genetics will do their part. That and patience.

Make a correction "a correction", not an inconvenience.

Every correction will show up somewhere else so make sure it is worth it. For example: My dog has been wanting to hook back into the short gun while being sent for the long. He has been getting his butt kicked if he did it which he has responded to very well and it is no longer an issue. Now fast foward to last week. We were running a Q and he goes out and smokes the 1st series land Mark's. They set up the blind and the line is straight through the old fall of the short gun with the gunner still sitting put there. Guess who is having NO part of going towards that short gun! Picked him up and back to training.

    This works well also.

Be patient. Let them be a puppy. Socialization is waaaay more important than training. Keep training sessions short. Do not tolerate anything from a pup that you don't want to tolerate with a grown dog. HAVE FUN!
