    ha·boob
    /həˈbo͞ob/
    noun
a violent and oppressive wind blowing in summer, especially in Sudan, bringing sand from the desert.

Cool cool cool. Substitute pollen for dust and, voila.

    Serenity now!

    And apparently, dangerous...

    GREENVILLE, S.C. —
A phenomenon caused by thunderstorms has killed people in several countries, and it has nothing to do with lightning.

Thunderstorm asthma is caused by dynamic airflow during strong storms combined with pollen, experts say, and the current pollen count in the Upstate is ranging from high to extremely high.

WYFF News 4 meteorologist Chris Justus says there is a probability again today of storms firing up in the afternoon, which could create the conditions experts warn about.

Violent winds sweep up allergens, such as pollen, creating tinier particles. While larger pollen grains are usually filtered by hairs in the nose, the smaller pollen fragments can pass through and enter the lungs, triggering asthma attacks, sometimes in people who have never suffered from asthma before.

Thunderstorm asthma typically happens when a storm hits while pollen levels are excessively high, experts say.

Historic storm-related asthma outbreak in 2016

Some thunderstorm asthma events have left city emergency services overwhelmed. Hundreds of people were rushed to hospitals in Victoria, Australia in November 2016 for treatment of thunderstorm asthma.

During a four-hour period, more than 1,900 calls for emergency medical services and ambulance transport were made -- one call every four to five seconds. An extra 60 ambulances were deployed, as well as police and firefighters. At least nine people died from the storm-related asthma.

    Problem could be increasing

Some health experts fear thunderstorm asthma could become a bigger problem with more air pollution and global warming, which some scientists say is extending allergy seasons.

Outbreaks of thunderstorm asthma have been reported in England, Italy, Australia, Iran and the United States. A study by Emory University and University of Georgia researchers in 2010 found that emergency department visits for asthma attacks increased by 3 percent during the 24 hours following thunderstorms.

Anyone with a history of asthma or labored breathing should avoid going outside during and after a thunderstorm, experts warn. The small pollen particles created by the storm can linger for up to 24 hours.

Anyone who thinks they are experiencing asthma should seek medical treatment, since it is a potentially life-threatening condition.
