Default Rep. Hill calls Flimsey "Swamp Creature"

SC Representative and other gun rights activists gathered at a popular shooting range and gun store on Monday to denounce US Senator Lindsey Graham and his support for what they call “red flag gun confiscation legislation.”

District 8 State Representative Jonathon Hill (R-Anderson) and National Association for Gun Rights President Dudley Brown held a news conference Monday evening at Sharpshooters Gun Club on Rutherford Rd.

Graham, who is the Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman, and his committee will be conducting hearings on “red flag” legislation.

“Red flag gun confiscation schemes, also known as ‘Extreme Risk Protection Orders,’ are egregious violations of the right to self-defense and the right to due process,” Hill said in a news release. “Senator Graham is advancing legislation that represents an un-American departure from the idea that you are ‘innocent until proven guilty.’ Bottom line—it treats innocent citizens like dangerous criminals.”

Hill went on to call Graham a “swamp creature” and warned that Graham “will pay a high political price for crossing South Carolina gun owners with the ‘red flag’ law.”

Upstate rep kicked out of Caucus says he’s ‘officially not a swamp creature’
Anderson Republican Jonathon Hill voted out by overwhelming majority

    COLUMBIA, S.C. —

The South Carolina House GOP Caucus has kicked out one of its members who is from the Upstate.

The State newspaper reported that Anderson Republican Jonathon Hill was voted out in a closed-door meeting in which he was accused of “erroneous and hostile attacks” on fellow Republicans that “have gone too far.”

Hill, who is staunchly pro-life and gun rights, is frequently at odds with the other members of the caucus.

He is known for his critical online commentary -- including criticism of his colleagues -- and even for giving out their phone numbers to angry constituents.

After giving out phone numbers, Hill wrote on his blog: “I did learn that calls to cell numbers can get out of hand. While one would hope that concerned citizens would exercise basic, common-sense courtesies such as not calling in the middle of the night, this is not always the case!

“At the end of the day, I have not one regret. This issue is too important to let slide by. Inconvenient calls from constituents are part of the job, an occupational hazard of being an elected official.

No matter how loud politicians squeal and denounce, confrontational politics works. It’s high time we conservatives started using these tactics to defend life, liberty, and property -- and defunding Planned Parenthood is an important battle in the war to protect the humanity of the unborn.”

An overwhelming majority of Hill’s colleagues voted in favor of removing him. He will only be allowed back in if a majority of the caucus were to vote in favor of it, an unlikely possibility.

In response to his removal, Hill posted on Faecbook: “OFFICIALLY NOT A SWAMP CREATURE --Today, my membership in the House Republican Caucus has been suspended. While I welcome the opportunity to be seen as separate from such a corrupt organization, the intensity of their smear campaign against me and my allies just shows how much pressure they are under to pass Constitutional Carry.

“They can do their worst, but I will not back down or be deterred. The only way for the Republican caucus to make the pressure stop is to PASS CONSTITUTIONAL CARRY --as any good Republican would.

“Note: legislative caucuses are merely private organizations. To be a member, you only have to be elected on the party ticket and pay annual dues. Membership in the caucus is not a prerequisite to filing and running as a Republican candidate, nor is it affect membership in the county or state Republican Party.

“I am still a Republican member of the South Carolina House, a member of the Anderson County Republican Party, and a member of the South Carolina Republican Party. I will continue to run as a Republican. Whether I’m a member of a private club of legislators is inconsequential and symbolic. The fact that they would do this at all says more about them than it does about me.”

Leaders in the South Carolina House of Representatives are doubling down on their decision to suspend state representative Jonathon Hill from the chamber’s Republican caucus earlier this week.

To be clear: Hill is still a member of the S.C. House of Representatives. The third-term lawmaker from Anderson County has simply been suspended from the partisan assemblage of GOP House members, which is technically not a public body (although many would dispute that contention).

Anyway, Hill was suspended for allegedly violating the confidentiality of the group, however House majority leader Gary Simrill later told mainstream media outlets that Hill had been suspended for “erroneous and hostile” remarks toward his colleagues.

We reached out to Hill in the aftermath of his suspension but did not receive a response – which is curious considering this news outlet has typically supported him in his efforts on behalf of individual liberty and limited government at the S.C. State House.

Hill ultimately addressed his suspension via social media, claiming it was the result of “pressure” lawmakers are facing to pass his bill expanding gun rights in the Palmetto State (H. 3456).

“While I welcome the opportunity to be seen as separate from such a corrupt organization, the intensity of their smear campaign against me and my allies just shows how much pressure they are under to pass Constitutional Carry,” he wrote.

Republican lawmakers were sent the following message in response to Hill’s post …

Yesterday members of the House Republican Caucus overwhelmingly voted to suspend Rep. Jonathon Hill from the group. I want to be clear, there was no “smear campaign” against Rep. Hill. As Caucus members, it is expected that we handle disagreements with each other as well as the whole legislative body with respect and decorum. It is also expected to be able to operate in an environment in which we have confidence in each other but with obstructionists like Rep. Hill, neither respect nor confidence exists.

As many of you have personally experienced, Rep. Hill and the groups he is part of make erroneous and hostile attacks on members. Their threats and bullying perpetuated by their own rhetoric used to defame Rep. Peter McCoy crossed the line of civil discourse. Rep. Hill’s misrepresentation of not only the members he targets, but also the legislative body are unbecoming of a member of the State House as well as a member of the House Republican Caucus.

As many of you witnessed Rep. Hill apologized during the meeting, as he has done before, for spreading misinformation but hours later posted on his Facebook page more of his defaming narrative.

Please let us know if you have any questions regarding the meeting yesterday.

The “threats and bullying” line refers to comments made about S.C. House judiciary chairman Peter McCoy on the Facebook page of the Freedom Action Network of South Carolina (FANSC) – a limited government group led by former Americans For Prosperity (AFP) state director Dave Schwartz.

Earlier this month, this group singled out McCoy as the Palmetto State’s “No. 1 enemy of restoring our gun rights.” One commenter on the group’s page took it even further than that …

“Totally sucks that one guy has so much control,” the commenter wrote. “Maybe we should just shoot him?”

That remark prompted McCoy to request an investigation by the S.C. State Law Enforcement Division (SLED) and to ask deputies of the Charleston County sheriff’s office to patrol his home.

No word yet on the status of the SLED inquiry …

Drama between Hill and GOP leaders in the S.C. House is nothing new. A little over a month ago, Hill called Simrill a “liar” during a heated exchange over a procedural matter – drawing rebukes from his Democratic and Republican colleagues.

    Our view on all this?

As we have noted in our previous coverage, we do not believe the death threat against McCoy was credible – and are profoundly disappointed that lawmakers and mainstream media outlets have chosen to sensationalize it in an effort to demonize thousands of law-abiding, limited government advocates.

While simultaneously excusing their own failure to protect a fundamental liberty …

Coverage in The (Columbia, S.C.) State newspaper (here) and The (Charleston, S.C.) Post and Courier (here) has been particularly disappointing – with the latter outlet chiding Second Amendment backers as having “only themselves” to blame for the failure of Hill’s legislation.

“This is what you get for shooting off your mouths,” columnist Brian Hicks wrote.

    Sad …

As for Hill, we will continue to treat him the same way we treat any public official – praising him when we believe he is doing right and criticizing him when we believe he is doing wrong.

Finally, as for GOP lawmakers’ decision to boot Hill from their fraternity, that is exclusively up to them. We have no problem with their decision, although we believe it reflects poorly on everyone involved.

Our guess? The matter will be decided once and for all next spring when Hill presumably runs in a contested primary for a fourth term representing the people of S.C. House District 8 (map).

Yep. A beta looking hippy fellow with a backbone that does not ask others how to vote or make position government positions for buddies for I don’t blame you I wouldn’t want him pimp slab me either let all the RINOs in the legislator.

Not to mention shining a light on the SC GOP true disdain for the 2nd. They prove yet again they are arrogant enough to tell us what we need and do not need and the heck with Constitution just like liberals.

We sent one ranking tenure anti-2nd senator home now hopefully the “good” rep for Charleston will face the same feat.

I'm all for shaking things up and challenging the status quo. But let's be honest. Posting people's personal cell phone on social media is a dick move.
