After a few close calls Saturday, we finally got on a hot pair around 8:15 Sunday morning.
It was a mad dash to get set up as they closed the distance not letting more than 10 seconds go by without gobbling. When we caught sight of the first bird at 50 or so yards, i’m not sure which was worse, my shaking or him about to hyperventilate. What felt like an eternity, they finally made their way at full strut to 20 yards but no shot. Thankfully, they were behind some palm fronds so he could rest the gun on his knee for a moment. As they broke the 15 yard mark, I was telling him put the bead on his head and shoot but his facemask had fallen down. By time I had moved slowly enough to fix it, they were at about 8 yards and he let the .410 rip. Moments later he had a foot on the birds head and the biggest smile I’d ever seen.
