South Carolina decides not to hold annual 'Tiger Burn' pep rally
The Associated Press

COLUMBIA, S.C. --
The University of South Carolina announced Tuesday it will not hold its traditional "Tigerburn" pep rally before its rivalry football game with Clemson University because of a beach fire that killed six of the school's students last month.

The rally where students burn a massive papier-mache Clemson Tiger has been a tradition at South Carolina for four decades, but students felt it wasn't right to hold the ceremony so soon after the Oct. 28 fire in Ocean Isle Beach, N.C., that killed six University of South Carolina students and one Clemson student, University of South Carolina spokesman Russ McKinney said.

The student groups who help run the pep rally scheduled for Nov. 23 haven't decided what to do instead, McKinney said.

Clemson has canceled its own ceremony where students hold a mock funeral and burn in effigy "Cocky," the University of South Carolina's mascot. Instead, the students will hold a pep rally that organizers are calling "Fowl Fest."

A good response by Carolina and Clemson. Both are showing a lot of class.

USC's motto, "Emollit mores nec sinit esse feros" (Learning humanizes character and does not permit it to be cruel) This is a classy act on the part of both schools. USC is a great University. it is still so sad that these young lives were lost.

I am truly sorry that those kids died. I did not know them personally, but know people that did.

That being said, I think we have fallen into a world of overly sensitized "victims". People die everyday and many stories are far more tragic than these. Death is the last step of life in this world. I don't mean to sound crass, but move on. I don't feel cancelling either event was warranted.

What do you know! JP and I actually agree on something.

I'm with you on this one. It's tragic they were so young and their lives were cut short. Death is tragic for anyone direcly related to the deceased. I doubt the families would link these rivalry/spirit type things to what happened at that beach house. One has nothing to do with the other.

Well one of the kids have sat on the row in front of me for years. and as much as I know travis would love a good tiger burning, I think it is very classy for them to forgo the burn this year. It is pretty sad to be there and no why there is an empty seat in front of me. Those kids lives went up in flames, and it shows respect for the families and the grieving students.

Good call on the Universities parts...
I agree that death happens everyday, but no need to rub it in so soon after a tragedy...

I don't think that I am being calloused. Should they stop the consumption of alcohol at the Clemson game this w/e b/c some drunk killed one of his fraternity brothers in an accident last Saturday? ...or stop driving.

If it was my family member, I really don't think I would give two flips about whether they held a Tiger-Burn or Barn-Yard Burn. I do not think my grieving process would not be altered.

As a society, we have gone overboard in coddling the "victims" of "tragedies". We name stretches of Interstate for fallen LE officers that died while doing their job. Trust funds and benevolence funds are set up for firefighters that died doing their job. They wanted to build a park in their honor. I think its overboard. Death happens. We will all go when God decides its time. It may be while your at work, or hunting, or sleeping on the couch watching a football game. There is nothing we can do to stop it. It is sad when it happens, but onyl truely sad for those directly effected, but for the rest of the world, life goes forward.

All good and valid points jp.

Anyone arguing your points is caught up in emotion. Seems it has become fashionable to get all sanctimonious about fireman, police and such here lately and calling them "heroes" has also become the in thing to do. This "emotional trend" really came into full swing following 9/11 and has gotten a little out of hand in my opinion.

But I really get a kick out of folks who get furious, even violent, at the very idea someone would disagree with their position on things like this.

Just plain Sappy.

Just because someone signs up or wears tha uniform doesn't automatically make them a hero. However, those boys ducking bullets in Bagdad and Khandahar are definately candidates.

Thanks. From time to time, I get a little liberal with my H's, L's, and G's.

I wonder if Candork could possibly help me with that. What with a master's degree and all, it only makes since .
