    Default Interesting (river flooding)

39 years ago, LSU did a study and found that the Mississippi River would change course and head down the Atchafalya River within 40 years, stranding billions of dollars (trilions in today's money) in industry on the old river course. Many think this year is shaping up to be the one...

Humans have never successfully controlled an alluvial river. Every subsequent flood will encounter a higher river bed due to sedimentation from the periods between floods when velocity slows. Inevitably each flood will get higher and higher in elevation even though the flow may not necessarily increase increase in volume.

The river will overtake the ORCS if nothing is done and it will permanently go down the Atchafalaya, turning LA infrastructure and way of life upside down. It will cause catastrophic damage. Every route from West to East LA will be destroyed, the closest route to get from Houston to NOLA will be via I-20. Morgan city and surrounding communities would be destroyed. Houma/Thibodaux area will be under 1-2' of water during the annual river flood periods. Fresh water would be scarce for many south LA communities and industry. Shipping down the intracoastal canal would be cutoff and impossible as the IC would be silted up at the new river. The southeast part of the state to northwest of NOLA will become a saltwater estuary.

I have a house that sits on an Ox Bow of the White River. These last 10 years the flooding has been crazy. That Mightly Mississippi River controls a lot of far reaching aspects of life.

The silt that washes down the Mississippi into the Atchafalya delta will swallow you. Screenshot_20190304-110054_Photos.jpg

They could always call the hydro engineers at SanteeCooper for advice.

Second time the Corps has opened the Bonnet Carre Spillway this year. This thing has only been opened 13 times since 1937. It's bad. The Mississippi river is raging right now.

There are few issues that can not be solved by high explosives!

I sent this to a buddy LA. Here's what he said,

My lab boss' wife is a project engineer at the NO Civil Engineers office. They're fighting a loosing battle to keep it in the levee system. There are parts of the river bottom that have added 30 ft of silt in spots near the dams/electrical plants. That raises the river with less water and contributes to earlier flooding. At some point nature WILL win out and it will flow down the Atchafalaya Basin.

Sam Clements said it 120 years ago. Man can do whatever he wants but no human controls The River. The River will do what it will do.

Corps getting ready to open these gates for only the third time in history. Looks like things are going to get real sporty heading down toward Morgan city.
