    Default New bees.

I am starting my first bee colony in a few weeks. Does it matter where I buy them from? Are bees from one framer any better or worse then another’s? I’ve been searching Craigslist but can’t tell if any sellers a are better or worse then the other. If I remember correctly some one was bringing bee packages to sportsmen’s warehouse for pickup. Does anyone know who that was? Or do y’all have a recommendation of who to buy from? I’d like to go ahead and get on a list before everyone is sold out.

I’m looking for a 3# package but started considering a nuc.

I live in Little Mountain but of course I’m will the drive to pick them up but the closer the better as the wife is a little uneasy about driving around with a box of bees.

    Thanks for the help.

They are all gonna die or swarm and leave. You'll probably get a couple supers on and think you're about to get some honey and then the beatles and moths will take over. Just go buy a jar.

Blythewood bee company is a reputable source of bees close to you. If I was just starting out I would buy a nuc. By buying the nuc you are getting an already established colony. Just make sure that you're getting 3 full frames of bees in the middle and the outside frames should have some honey and pollen.

Don't forget about treating for varroa mites when you get your bees. This is critical.

I have the best luck with oxalic acid.

Blythewood should be able to help you, if need be...

Thank you. Should I treat for mites even if I don’t see any?

I would not treat for anything until the colony has gotten established. Just my .02

Treating bees for mites is as controversial as vaccinating children. Some treat and some don't. My suggestion would be to watch a few Ytube videos on how to do an alcohol wash or sugar roll to keep up with the number of mites your colony has. A lot people shy away from the alcohol wash because they have a hang up about killing a couple hundred bees to do the test. I prefer the alcohol myself it just seems to be more accurate. Find and join your local bee club they are always a great resource.

Is the intended benefit of bees to pollinate or produce honey? How much honey does a 3lb colony produce? How often?

I know absolutely nothing about bees.

I remember someone saying on here “Bee people are odd folk” right next to “horse people”.
